talking about the dangers of absolutism,Prahok wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2019 11:01 amTo be fair, Aseriousman, I am not trying to sway your opinion. It is just that you present an opportunity to air the dangers of absolutism and the blinkered thinking that it encourages.Aseriousman wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2019 8:10 amI expect them to have a firm opinion based on the facts and to take a firm moral stance, so that the perpetrator can be quickly apprehended and punished.
We have an existing example of the dangers of operating under such assumptions in the form of Aung San Suu Kyi. People who had the same approach as the one you advocate lauded 'The Lady' without paying any serious attention to her policies and practices until it was too late.
Most of the business community will have a healthy scepticism for any government in power in Cambodia, regardless of the party, until such time as it proves itself to be otherwise. Such scepticism is a part of risk management that allows businesses to survive.
As I said, I am not here to sway your thinking as arguing on the internet is like a compass with no markings.
Can you support that view with a comparative study?
And let's not just hear about how obvious it is.
I have more to comment on, but just let's leave it at this for now, as I would be interested in a comparison between Aung San Suu Kyi and Sam Rainsy, and see if it's as accurate an assessment as many posters here believe.

Why could he not be critical of both, just more critical of Drain Man?

It's a scary mentality, more prevalent in countries with conflicts. When I was young I got a lot of shit for not supporting a certain paramilitary group. You were either with them or seen as a threat.

You have made it clear that you can only see black or white and that you cannot perceive any other way.
Everything in life is relative.
Sleep, those little slices of death — how I loathe them.
It took me about ten seconds to decide this thread wasn't worth any effort. Good to see my instincts haven't let me down.

Replacing absolutist thinking with critical thinking is a part of a number of de-radicalization programmes.

That's actually quite good for you, as you only took five seconds to make the decision Farage would make a great PM.

Yes, he proved the point about using the business classes as a trope. I'm not expecting it to gain star place among the other tropes though, or even gain any place on this forum. Gavin Mac just proved that they are the worst. But this board will only point fingers at business class members when they fuckup up and get caught and not for the fact that they are morally lacking as a whole group.Petrol Head wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2019 8:28 amGavin Mac's wrap degeneracy roll call was awesome, though.

If they aren't happy about supporting this government anymore and have weighed up the situation, it's for some very good reasons. 127 of them if I remember correctly.
They almost withdrew the EBA a few years ago about land grabbing and village displacement re that huge sugar plantation. I expect they didn't because of weighing up the consequences for the country as a whole. I think what you're seeing now, is their feeling that what the CPP have done needs to be responded to with firm action, as no other course is now open because their relationship with the CPP has become untenable.
Businessmen who run Gap, Nike, Addidas, etc have all come out in agreement with the EU, and are also calling for reforms. Other businesses are too.
Many Cambodian expat businessmen are not. Ergo, they don't support the EU's call for reforms and pressure to try to make them happen, and instead decide to support the illegitimate CPP as the best choice for them in Cambodia.
Democracy for the people vs money to be made using Rainsy = Aung San Suu Kyi as its main reason, but without backing this opinion up with any studies or observations. Sounds very absolutist to me.
Ok, so apart from anything else you're both suggesting the EU with its huge system of democracy is an absolutist body.Prahok wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2019 2:18 amIt is. If you put GavinMac in Lazbuddie, TX for a month with only the internet to keep himself busy, he still wouldn’t have time to compile a list of the degenerate acts of the other groups you mentioned, sexpats, methpats, teflers, backpackers, etc.Aseriousman wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2019 10:36 amYes, he proved the point about using the business classes as a trope. Just scanning the recent topics here I see the German overstayer with his bizarre story about a tuk tuk stealing $9k from him; No Joke Howard dying; Boomer killing himself with China white; the Australian women that tried to smuggle 1 kg in heroin, BSCW, Violet’s taxi ride, Ken Wilcox (Gavin put him as a businessman/dr, but he just seems like a scammer to me).
What do you do for a living, if I may ask?

I'm a businessman, with ethics of course. I made a decision to get out of Cambodia awhile a go because I don't agree with what this government has done/ is doing to its people.Wayward Woods wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2019 11:31 amIf you put GavinMac in Lazbuddie, TX for a month with only the internet to keep himself busy, he still wouldn’t have time to compile a list of the degenerate acts of the other groups you mentioned, sexpats, methpats, teflers, backpackers, etc.Aseriousman wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2019 10:36 amYes, he proved the point about using the business classes as a trope.
