1. Does anyone know please how long and best way from Siem Reap to Preah Vihear temple site? I will be with my teenage daughter and two younger sons. We are planning to go up there after a day or two at Angkor.
2. Is Kep ruined like Sihanoukville is? I didn't even go to Sihanoukville when I was living in Phnom Penh, basically not once after like 2006 except for a few trips to Otres when it was really quiet and I had young children. Now I hear - and I am not an authority on this point (or, it's been said, on any point)- that the beaches and town are overrun with Chinese mafia. Not sure I want to take my family down there, but would consider Kep if it is still normal. We used to stay at Veranda and eat at the crab markets. I am guessing it is unrecognizable from the mid 2000s. Still nice?
Sorry if this is an unusual post. I don't have anyone to slag off or anything to complain about
two questions please

I believe Kep has so far avoided the recent rampant developments. Have fun.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

1. The best way has to by taxi, surely. You in the front and the siblings in the back. How long don't know.
2. Kep has changed a lot but is still a good place but the Veranda is now very expensive , although the hillside there is now dotted with similar places to suit most budgets. If you have loads of money check out Kep Sailing Club Ban Chat or something like that. Rooms , restaurant, bar and a great sunset spot. The crab market is at least treble in size while the size of the crabs has gone the other way. No point n visiting the crab market at all. Quite a few good French places have opeed up to eat. The actual town around the beach has a few good spots now whereas in your time there was really only one place.
Shame I ain't around as it would have been nice to say hello again.
Adam , the drunken teacher one not the Bayon Pearnik one.

Preah Vihear can be done as a day trip from Siem Reap (it'll take all day), but you'll have to hire a car & driver as organized trips are few & far between. It won't come cheap (around $100).
If this is your first trip & you want to get away from the crowds try Banteay Thom, Wat Atwea, & Chau Srei Vibol (you need an Angkor ticket but all can be done by tuk-tuk). Banteay Ampil could be an option, but it can't be accessed by tuk-tuk or car, so with kids you would have to walk from the village (you don't need a ticket for this Temple *as of 2016).
