Not him. Whitwell knew his way round a vowel. He was a posh English public school boy who lost it in se Asia never to return home.

Ah. So sad. And you, tty, have a nice way with words yourself. "...knew his way round a vowel"; did you make that up, or is that a British phrase I've never heard? In any case, well done.
So many have lost it in SE Asia never to return home. It takes a disciplined person to stay in Cambodia and remain healthy (or alive). That said, shit happens, especially as we get older.

James died in London while working as a financial journalist, not in Saigon. He was a perfectly normal young man who did drugs occasionally, liked women and loved Cambodia. He also set up the first website for selfharmers which is still extant. He was very considerate of others and an unusually uncynical and intelligent and friendly guy. But for the drugs he would still be with us.

He set up ruinyourlife with a completely different intention to the self harm site it became. Not denying his intelligence or considerate nature though. But he was a massive narcissist (by his own admission). I mean who tops themselves because they are having a book coming out?

At ACE Sihanoukville, March 1995. This photo was taken before my driver took me to Ream Naval Base, where I was teaching ESL to the Cambodian military. I had to have a bodyguard as part of the contract, as KR was still active in S. Cambodian, on Route 4 and also in the north of the country (the "dry season offensive").
The driver also kept a grenade in the console of his Toyota Camry! (what other than a Toyota Camry, of course). The AK 47 lay across the back seat.
My book Love and Loss in Cambodia: a memoir has been in the Top 100 bestsellers for SE Asia Travel since it came out a few days ago. Hope you all can read it and let me know what you think.
Thanks for reading it.
edited to include that photo by KC (aka LTO)

Thanks for supporting my book, "Love and Lost in Cambodia: a memoir."
It's going well. As you can see above, #1 new release in SE Asian travel.
It's ranking well in Thai, Khmer, and SE Asian travel guides, and now ranking in other categories too. It's the #1 new release for Cambodia, although it doesn't have much competition in that category.

Will take a look at your book.
Cool pics, btw. That hair, sunnies and cap combination couldn't be more mid-90s if it tried!

Right? LTO had long hair when I met him in 1989. In this photo, he's had a hair cut. He had really bad eyes, so had to take good care of them. He could barely see without his glasses, and after staring at the computer screen in Cambodia for years, he had a really bad detached retina at one point.Starving Pelican wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2019 8:41 amWill take a look at your book.

He usually wore his hat the other way around, but we were posing for photos here!
The book sales are going really well. Today I've only sold one online, so am having a bit of an off day, but all in all, I've had lots of interest. I went to the Cambodian American International Conference yesterday and met lots of nice Khmer people from all over the USA---some older people who fled Cambodian in the mid to late seventies as well as some hipster young people from inner city Seattle and Portland. Good day. I even met a couple--a Khmer guy and a women from the USA--who met at Angkor Wat. He was her tour guide, and they fell in love! I only had two books with me, as it's a new release, but I gave them one copy.
Anyway, thanks everyone for supporting my book. Grateful.

Amazing how quickly a man can go from looking young to looking middle aged all from hair loss! I first met Ken in 1999 and he looked the latter. Your face is also familiar but I don't recall meeting you , at least not as Ken's other half.
Good luck with the book.

37 to 42 can be a game-changer for appearance. Were you working with Richard in SHV? Ken went down and closed SHV out. That was sad to have to do. I was down there a bit as well.
You may have met the "other" other half
If I saw a photo of you, I might recognize you.
