Poems about Cambodia
Poems about Cambodia
Here you go, springrain. A special place for your promised versifying.
Fill your boots.
Fill your boots.
Might we start with the Dead Kennedys, or should it be in the hipster section? :
So, you've been to school
For a year or two
And you know you've seen it all
In daddy's car
Thinking you'll go far
Back east your type don't crawl
Playing ethnicky jazz
To parade your snazz
On your five-grand stereo
Braggin' that you know
How the naggers feel cold
And the slum's got so much soul
It's time to taste what you most fear
Right Guard will not help you here
Brace yourself, my dear
Brace yourself, my dear
It's a holiday in Cambodia
It's tough, kid, but it's life
It's a holiday in Cambodia
Don't forget to pack a wife
You're a star-belly snitch
You suck like a leech
You want everyone to act like you
Kiss ass while you bitch
So you can get rich
While your boss gets richer off you
Well, you'll work harder
With a gun in your back
For a bowl of rice a day
Slave for soldiers
Till you starve
Then your head is skewered on a stake
Now you can go where the people are one
Now you can go where they get things done
What you need, my son...
What you need, my son...
Is a holiday in Cambodia
Where people are dressed in black
A holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll kiss ass or crack
Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot
It's a holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll do what you're told
It's a holiday in Cambodia
Where the slums got so much soul
Pol Pot

There's also a Kiwi bloke, whose name eludes me for the moment, James something. Back in a bit.
He was English, sorry.

James Fenton
One man shall smile one day and say goodbye.
Two shall be left, two shall be left to die.
One man shall give his best advice.
Three men shall pay the price.
One man shall live, live to regret.
Four men shall meet the debt.
One man shall wake from terror to his bed.
Five men shall be dead.

Well he was Thailand based
She was an airforce wife
He used to fly weekends
It was the easy life
But then it turned around
And he began to change
She didn't wonder then
She didn't think it strange
But then he got a call
He had to leave that night
He couldn't say too much
But it would be alright
He didn't need to pack
They'd meet the next night
He had a job to do
Flying to Cambodia
And as the nights passed by
She tried to trace the past
The way he used to look
The way he used to laugh
I guess she'll never know
What got inside his soul
She couldn't make it out
Just couldn't take it all
He had the saddest eyes
The girl had ever seen
He used to cry some nights
As though he lived a dream
And as she held him close
He used to search her face
As though she knew the truth
Lost inside Cambodia
But then a call came through
They said he'd soon be home
She had to pack a case
And they would make a rendez-vous
But now a year has passed
And not a single word
And all the love she knew
Has disappeared out in the haze
(Cambodia, don't cry now, no tears now)
And now the years have passed
With not a single word
But there is only one thing left
I know for sure
She won't see his face again
She was an airforce wife
He used to fly weekends
It was the easy life
But then it turned around
And he began to change
She didn't wonder then

Rob, the chant: Pol Pot, Pol, Pot ...
Was always so resonant for me.
But this is about poetry, so understandable that just the lyrics sheet is posted up.
Thanks, man

Like that one, eh ?
How about this one:-
When I was young and had no sense
In far-off Meanchey
I lost my heart to a Battambang girl
As lovely as the day.
Her skin was gold, her hair was jet,
Her teeth were ivory;
I said, 'for twenty silver pieces,
Maiden, sleep with me'.
She looked at me, so pure, so sad,
The loveliest thing alive,
And in her lisping, virgin voice,
Stood out for twenty-five.

Tears are forming in my eyes (which are failing, but I can still enjoy those poignant lyrics).
Petrol Head, thanks for that.
Does that last line refer to years or Dollars?
What do you think?

Wait a minute.
Hold on there.
This thread is reserved for the promised springrain poems about Cambodia, not for him copypasting other people’s work.
Come on fella.

Alright, I did make a promise. I forgot the original title - it was NGO Clerk.
Around the time 2001 - 2008, these suited chaps would regularly be seen in: Rose Bar, Starlight Lounge, Chez Johnnies, Barbados & others. This is what I wrote down then.
NGO Clerk
I am an NGO worker, I have a huge machine
Between my legs; (No not that, silly) this one’s really mean
It’s in inverse proportion to the other one I’ve got
The silencer has been removed, so like a pistol shot
Followed by a lion’s roar, I can announce my presence.
My salary is well let’s see, I suppose in essence
Compared to what it is I do (which isn’t very much)
It’s absolutely huge, gi - normous, oh yes, and free lunch!
And if the boss knew of the cost expenses would accrue?
No problem, you just write it off, a fake invoice will do.
Who gives a toss? It’s not my loss, the donors don’t know, hell
(There’s no way they’d get rid of me, ‘cause they’re at it as well)
The bar girls all still welcome me; sometimes I ring the bell
Free drinks for all and sundry. Don’t ask who’s paying, well….
But if my wife knew of my life, she’d kick me out today
So listen dolly, here’s some lolly, just so you don’t say
How would you like the cash, miss - in twenties or in tens?
It could be really hit or miss, I suppose that depends….
You’ll do, you’re cute, (D’you like my suit?) One drink before we go?
A scotch (no ice) the price? Don’t worry –
I’m an NGO

The next one (kindly forgive my natural optimism) is about when I lost a pair of socks to the rather dubious laundry I used at the time.
On finding my socks had gone missing again
On finding my socks had gone missing again
I stormed back in a mood
To fix the brute who took my loot
And give her a piece of my mind
"You’re laundry has just broken the record
for losing essential items."
"Don’t blame me dearie, I can see clearly
you don’t need your possessions
So when my son said ‘Hang on Mum’
I like these socks, they’re Nike.
They just took off and walked away
Would I stop them? Not likely!"
