As above, has anyone taken a car in for more than 1 day and if so at which border?
Did you buy insurance for Thailand?
Thanks

I know insurance is compulsory (based on value of vehicle and engine capacity) but if the vehicle ID isn’t in your name you’ve no chance.

Yes it can be done. PucketRichard and Miguletto and others have done it recently.

Yes, easy at Koh Kong. But a different story at Poipet, I'm told.

While some friends were able to cross at Poipet I was myself refused entry last February. Luckily I was able to cross on the same day further north at the O’Smach border before coming back via Koh kong a couple of weeks later.
I have done it many times , both at Koh Kong and Poipet . You need the car ID card in your name , and you need to be eligible to do a border crossing into Thailand . At the customs office you will need to buy insurance , usually around 1000 baht for one year . Customs will give you a 30 day temporary conveyance permit . You then proceed to immigration with your insurance doc , conveyance doc , car ID card and passport . They will give you a entry permit for the car and stamp your passport . On your return , go to customs first , give them their form back , and then to immigration , give them their form back , and get your passport stamped . Occasionally it does change slightly , ie , the army guys want to see the paperwork . In 15 years of doing it several times a year I have never had anyone look in the car . When I come back in to Cambodia , I jump out and give the customs guys 100 baht . I have only ever been stopped once in Thailand , at a police checkpoint , showed them the docs issued at the border and waved on .

Do they discriminate and would you pay more insurance?

Insurance is the same price as for a tyco but Thais do indeed discriminate when it comes to parking in a mall, I get to use the dedicated supercar parking lotYaTingPom wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 8:13 amWould it be easier if you were in say a CRV as apposed to a, oh I don’t know, say a Porsche?Barang_doa_slae wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 7:07 pm

I used to cross the border to Thailand at Had Lek, Koh Kong about once a month, since 2015, usually for shopping or picking up visiting friends in Trat. For the past 2 years visits to Thailand are restricted to 2 entries a year without a visa. I do this in July and December.
The procedure has not changed since I did it for the first time, except that last time, in June 2019, the Cambodian guards/officers at the turnpike asked for a copy of the car registration card and the passport.
(I wrote down this procedure shortly after I came back from Thailand for my own benefit, because I tend to forget the sequence of steps to be taken entering and leaving Thailand.)
A. From Had Lek/Koh Kong to Thailand:
Get yourself stamped out of Cambodia and drive your car across the Cambodian check post (car with Cambodian registration in your name only). Park your car in front of the Thai border gate. Walk into Thailand and get your passport stamped for entry. Take your stamped passport and the registration card to the counter (its the middle one of three counters facing the border gate) She will issue a Thai insurance policy valid for one year (800thb).
She will also the issue two import/export papers with your details.
Take these 2 papers and your registration card across the road to the customs department.
He will issue an import permit and a cardboard token.
These you take to the guard in a cabin at the entrance gate (again across from the customs office). The soldier will enter your details in a book an issue another token.
You then go back to your car and drive it into thailand were a soldier at the gate will take your token. You then advance to a barrier which will be opened after the gate-opener takes your import paper.
You are free now to drive into Thailand. There are 2 check posts on the road to Trat. At the second one near Trat town the police sometimes stop you and write down your details.
That's it for entering Thailand.
B. Going back to Cambidia via Had Lek/Koh Kong:
Stop your car at the Thai border gate and walk to get your passport stamped out. After that keep walking on the same (left) side to the customs office. Present your export paper ( the second of the two you were given when entering Thailand) and get ist stamped. Cross the road to
the window where she issued the insurance and import/export papers. She will make you sign her book and get the export paper stamped.
Take this to the guard's cabin and get a token.
Go back to your car and drive to the barrier where the gate-opener will let you in after taking the stamped export paper. Drive on and hand over the token to the soldier at the gate to Cambodia.
Drive into cambodia to the Cambodian customs check post where someone will raise a barrier to let you pass. Park you car in front of Cambodian immigration office to get your passport stamped into Cambodia.
You are now back home.
