Does anyone know why fruit in Cambodia is mostly imported? There's something very strange about a poor tropical country where the oranges bananas, pineapples etc are imported from Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
Even going to local markets, the story is the same: Tons of imported fruit -- which would seem to be very expensive for locals.
Is there some reason Cambodia's farmers haven't rushed in to fill the void?
What's up with fruit here?

I don't believe most is imported. Some, like apples/cherries are imported because they won't grow here. Others like oranges/ bananas do grow here but aren't quite the same as the imports.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I talked to someone from an NGO a few years ago. They were trying to encourage farmers to switch to fruit. The difficulty was that a lot of fruit trees take years until the first harvest; a lot of farmers do not have the financial reserves to wait that long and go for fast growing crops.

What about the UK?
Apart from apples everything else is imported, even strawberries off season, and probably apples (usually from SA).
They have spurts of “by local” but they’re often not local or are bloody expensive compared to imported.
My wife did laugh when I told her where we’d find a coconut and to win it we had to throw a ball at it. Not even fresh!
Pratts bananas are shit tasting so I’ll always buy imported.
