Road to Koh Kong and Border
Road to Koh Kong and Border
Don't do it, it's fuckd. Worse and for longer than it's been for a couple of decades.
Think I must have been getting spoilt with Cambodian roads lately and set off without research. From the turn off on the expressway, all the way to Koh Kong it's a complete nightmare.
Out.

That's useful to know. Last time I went that way in August, it was pretty much one long construction site from Sre Ambel all the way to Koh Kong. I'm definitely not in a hurry to use that road again, hopefully they'll complete it eventually.

Whats the road like from Chinooky to the Viet border now?

I agree, just got back from koh kong yesterday, the road is 140km nightmare, a few days ago in khmer times, it said it will be finished mid 2025RobW wrote: ↑Sat Apr 20, 2024 5:12 pmDon't do it, it's fuckd. Worse and for longer than it's been for a couple of decades.

What the fuck were you driving?
I drove a Hilux. The highway took about 10 mins at 180kmh, the next 140kms took 4 hours and was horrible. There was the odd person in a state Lexus with great suspension overtaking, but not many.

BS! He did it barefoot and naked without drinking any water. He did have a Hefe Weissbier when he got to Phnom Penh though.

Did they finally build the bridges? The last time I made that trip (about 20-25 years ago) there were three places where the minivan had to be ferried...
I travelled the Koh Kong to Sre Ambel road many times while it was still being built 2004 - 06. in Toyota Camrys then minibuses. It was obvious back then that the road would not last as it was built with layers of clay which had no metal base and everything was just mud, mud mud, with a coating of bitumen on top. Lost count of the times we had to take our shoes off and push our transport through mud. . And yes I still have pic's to prove it. The 4 ferry crossings were a great relief to stretch your legs and buy drinks or fruit.
The only other way was the Malaysian river boats [ torpedoes ] from KK to Snooky, but if the weather was bad it was like riding in a submarine and if the waves were hitting you from the side and with the top heavy deck cargo on the top we always wondered why the boat never tipped over. Sometimes I wished it would have tipped over to help wash out the toilets at the back so you could not smell the shit and seasick spew.
Many travellers preferred to rid on the top but you always ended up with wind burn and if the weather was bad you had no choice but to ride down below.
