I just got a new plastic foreign employment card/foreigner work permit from the Ministry of Labour & Vocational Training that I understand replaces the old card/paper book. Much better.
What is intriguing is that this new card has a QR code you can scan to see your details online ... only everyone can see it, and you can see everyone else's. The incompetence is mind boggling.

That's fucking ridiculous and needs sorting out.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Bloody hell.
I just scanned the QR code and tapped on the hyper link. I had to input my birthdate (which is on the card) and hey presto up pops my photo and details plus passport details.

Would it be outrageous to have photo and personal details on the card itself? I thought that's what ID-type cards usually contained.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:That is outrageous

I don't really get your point but will answer your Q anyway.gavinmac wrote:Would it be outrageous to have photo and personal details on the card itself? I thought that's what ID-type cards usually contained.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:That is outrageous
A drivers license/ID card etc is held by the owner and the personal info it contains it protected by the owner.
I am much more confident about my ability to physically protect my personal info than trusting a Khmer government online DB.
Khmer folk simply don't understand data protection or personal privacy.

If you choose to live in a country, the authorities may collect information about you and put it in government databases. It's nothing to be outraged about.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: I am much more confident about my ability to physically protect my personal info than trusting a Khmer government online DB.
Also, no one is ever going to "steal the identity" of an expat in Cambodia, because expats in Cambodia are usually fugitives and debtors who have already maxed out all their credit cards in their home countries.

Hehe governments and IT is always funny. I don't have a work permit, but a few things to test:
- Does Google index and crawl these links?
- Can you change the hyper-link and view another person's info?
- Is the only "authentication" a date of birth? (often leaked on social media, resume, fora, etc.)
@GM: I rather would have it on a physical card, if misuse could be ruled out I would still want it for privacy reasons. Sure most governments keep databases however there is most likely a difference in the level op competence between a Cambodian managed system versus a Western one. Even if they would have the exact same level of cyber-security I bet it would be easier to bribe or trick staff at the Cambodian variant.
