selling in Angkor Wat
selling in Angkor Wat
I am thinking of moving to Siem Reap and set up a business in Siem reap. Not opening a bar, guesthouse or restaurant. I can not be more specific, but part of the plan is selling things to tourists. Now my question:
I was in Angkor Wat last year and lots of people are selling stuff there. How is this arranged? Do you need licence or permit? Is there a year -ticket, so someone can go there every day? I already did send an email to the APSARA Authority but got no reply. If anyone has informatie or is already selling stuff there please tell me!

Go talk to the people at Blue Pumpkin. They had a restaurant in front of Angkor Wat (might still be there. It's been a few years). I'm not sure if BP is still foreign owned or not. I think any legally licensed business that has complied with whatever rules the Ministry of Commerce, the Apsara Authority, and the local sangkat have, can operate inside the complex. What your costs and profitability would be, are anyone's guess. I think failure can be assured, unless you have a ton of money, and a very influential Khmer partner who doesn't completely fleece you. Good luck. Please keep us posted.
I am sooooo very sorry if you can't understand or appreciate my sarcastic facetiousness.

"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
One post was on the question of selling inside Angkor Wat. The other was on (organized) crime and other illegal business practices Two completely different subjects.
From what I have learned:
I will not be selling inside Angkor Wat myself. I think I can not have a year pass.
I will let the Khmer do the selling with stuff I provide them with in commission and let them pay every day.

I posted a reply Yesterday, it had to be reviewed and it never came on the form. So again:
I posted 2 totally different questions:
- 1 About selling In Angkor Wat
. 2 About doing Business in Siem Reap/ Cambodia in general.
So my reply for this post:
What I found out till now: I don't get any reply from Apsara Authorities. You can not have a year ticket or so as foreigner. You can have a week pass max. Khmer go in and out for free.
My conclusion: Sell to Khmer vendors, they can sell your stuff without problems. I know they don't have money, so probably you would have to create a system. Give the stock for a day, let them pay in the evening and give them new stock. It don't believe anything else works
I am in doubt what to do with children I would like to be a good guy and want children to go to school in stead of selling to tourists. But when I engage adults they will probably send children out for selling.
On the other hand, these people are so poor that can we as westerns, decide that we take away the earning of these kids? Difficult situation

I am beat trying to work out what you were selling. My first guess was some kind of artwork which you would be doing yourself - like a kind of performance as people watch... but now if it’s possible for kids to sell I’ve no idea.
Small stuff like that WILL be duplicated with competition set up quickly if you are seen to be successful. I’d give it 3-6 months before there are half a dozen people copying your product/idea.
If you were doing something skilled (arty) then it’s much less likely they can copy to the same quality.

It's not that difficult to people who have morals and ethics and aren't self-interested. Don't have children sell your shit.james123 wrote: On the other hand, these people are so poor that can we as westerns, decide that we take away the earning of these kids? Difficult situation

I am sorry that 2 of my posts are almost the same. I Thought the first was lost in the system somewhere.
Anything about my product and copyright is discussed on: http://www.khmer440.com/chat_forum/view ... 10&t=61197
About the children selling stuff: I do not want children to sell my stuff. But When I recruit a adult to sell my stuff, he/she will might send kids out for selling too. As I am not every day, or even every week, inside Angkor Wat, and my Siem Reap management also, I can not check who's actually selling the product. I can make contract with vendors to forbid them selling by kids, but they probably can't read the contract, and I cannot set fines to enforce. So any suggestions?

You're putting the cart waaaaaaay ahead of the water buffalo. See if what you want to manufacture and license/trademark/patent/whatever is feasible first. Then worry about distribution. Also, contracts often mean diddly squat here, especially when you're not Khmer or extremely wealthy.

Flight of the Gibbon operates within Angkor Wat. I've also heard that they pay a substantial amount to be able to do so...chkwoot wrote:Go talk to the people at Blue Pumpkin. The way to go is never show your western face there and also make sure everybody selling thinks it is just from "your khmer manager" If they ask your Khmer manager he has to reply it is from some local in Phnom Penh.
They don't like competition, even with farming you can't just farm what you want if you decide to go big.. Even the rich families can't.. 1 family 1 crop !! So you have the palm oil family. and the sugar family.. Ofcourse this only is if you go big.. For export the same.. As you might know export to Europe is tax free.. but only certain rich families can do that..
so with small business it is same.. you have to think the way they think.. it is in a scarce way! "competition is scary "
So take precautions.. use your khmer wife of better yet a khmer person who you could trust... and set up the whole thing.. with NEVER EVER have you in the picture..

Thanks, great advise!!! Makes really sense! Not being sarcastic!
But, how to find a Khmer manager you can trust? Can it also be female? Are (young) female managers being accepted in Cambodia?
I have at this moment someone in Siem Reap which whom I am preparing this project. But ... she is western too. Certainly I would like to have a nice Cambodian girlfriend, but that only happens when I would be living there. So she is not in the picture right now.
It will not be easy to stay out of the picture. I like to manage these kind of projects and normally I am the "face" of the company. But I get the point!
Same about competition. Never thought about this. As far as I know I do not have competition in this project. That is the reason I started it But than again. There is a product a little like it but really very different. In appearance and in the way they make money. So best stay away from their way of operating as possible?
