Starting business in Siem Reap any mafia or so?
Starting business in Siem Reap any mafia or so?
Hello,
I have a question. I am thinking of starting a business (not bar restaurant or guesthouse) in Siem Reap involving selling stuff to tourists. See also my prior post.
I will set up my business without Cambodian Partner and register legally and intent to pay the taxes.
My question: Is there any risk of problems in the kind of extortion, protection money or taking over by local criminals? I have been in Siem Reap, PP, Vietnam and Thailand a couple of times, but that was traveling and no business. I have been doing business in China without problems and had the impression that beside from small local corruption and some grease money there would not be a lot of problems.
Any advice or experiences would be appreciated

I can highly advise ensuring that you have a decent a security company before trading, call 1-800-SPIGZY for an offer you can't refuse!

You can't make money selling stuff to tourists. Even if you were initially successful, a Khmer would notice and start selling the same stuff at a lower price. Unskilled Khmers would own businesses like selling stuff to tourists have extremely low profit margins because they are just trying to male a few hundred bucks a month to live on.
The only way to make money in Cambodia is to do something a Khmer can't do and can't copy you doing. Selling stuff to tourists is right in their bailiwick.

Some Germans believe that the baby milk sellers are to be afraid of.
The tax department and local police is the only mafia organizations that will hassle you.

about :"You can't make money selling stuff to tourists. Even if you were initially successful, a Khmer would notice and start selling the same stuff at a lower price."
I realise this. But i have read that even in Cambodia there are copyright laws. They do not count or enforce them for foreign stuff but copyright láws are respected and enforced between cambodian companies.
I am not selling myself I will be putting up a network of point of sale (Khmer) and distribution. Can not be to specific because they could copy before I am on the market and have registered Cambodian company.

If he partnered with a defensible Cambodian (having connections and good standing), maybe he'd be afforded some protection (for some time).
I have to say, some Khmer partners can use you for your superior technology and advanced knowledge, then take your idea/product and dump you as soon as they can live without you. Choose wisely.
Get real counsel / advice.

Recently Cambodia has passed some laws protecting patents and intellectual property rights.
Cambodia joined the Madrid system for IPR protection in 2015
Cambodia is presently a party to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (1883), the WIPO Convention (1967), Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (1994), and the Convention on Biological Diversity
(1992).
See:
Prakas No 706 on The Procedure for the Grant of Patents and Utility Model Certificates.
Patent Law, Art. 136; Prakas Rule 45
