How's the construction in Cambodia? Do apartments in big cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have good-quality apartments? How thin are the walls? How easily can you have a conversation with someone through the wall? How much noise comes in from outside?
My current apartment in Vietnam is pretty bad for noise and I could talk with people through the wall with no hindrance.
Do you consider your accommodation to be quiet? What noise do you hear? How much are you paying per month?

I've never noticed conversations from other apartments, walls are normally brick with heavy render and floors are reinforced concrete so not much gets through. I share a (locked off)central stairway with the place below so sometimes can hear their kids crying but it's not a big deal. My neighborhood is very quiet at night, I pay $130 a month for a place that's about 70 square meters with a balcony on two sides and a private entrance. I think that's unusually cheap though.

I should mention that it's not very central and I own all the contents, plus I've been in the same place for more than 5 years. Furnished apartments usually cost a bit more and at the lower end will have rubbish furniture.

Noise from outside is terrible - the doors here have air gaps of about 5 cm under them, cheap ass windows let all the noise through. Construction noise from 8 to 5, usually 6 days a week. Brats take over at 5, none of them can talk, just scream at the top of their lungs. That goes on until 7:30 pm. Then the noise from KTV's and bands starts. That's usually over by midnight. I hate noise. I buy Quies brand extended wear earplugs, get them at CarePharma. They're wax, comfortable, do a great job of shutting out the noise. Take ém out every three days, pop in a new pair. I'm wearing them now. Blissful quietude. Ahh...
I pay $230/month. Brand new place when I moved in 3 years ago. Two bedroom, balcony, I also got it unfurnished, had them not install a bathroom water heater or a/c. Khmer type apartment with some nice decorative touches.

Haha okay I basically do the same thing in Vietnam. Although I have to order earplugs from the net and they're probably not as good as your wax ones. Currently I have about 200 pairs of "3M 1100" earplugs. Miraculously I have found a quiet house to rent but it's not available until after Spring festival.rgrowden wrote:Noise from outside is terrible - the doors here have air gaps of about 5 cm under them, cheap ass windows let all the noise through. I think 1 in 10 houses actually have space between its neighbors, so most houses have shared walls or walls built right up next to their neighbors' walls.
It's not the quality of the building so much as the quality of the neighbours that ought to be be considered.
