Ha. Good luck!
I eventually found some Swiss Uvex helmets at Vannak motorcycles, but by now they may not have any more unless they managed to get in another shipment. Mine was $30.
Other than that I found a French place (sorry can't remember the name) but they wanted $350 for genuine European helmets.

Bought an Uvex at Vannak 2 month ago. US$ 30, good enough, but certainly not European quality.
Made a mistake, bought a matt black one, too hot in the sun. Better look for a white one.

À very "Good" helmet can be very bad. Superman found that out. In a head on
collision, your neck collapses before even a light weight helmet cracks.
And Nascar noticed that as the weight of a helmet increases, G-forces can
cause your neck to break, even without colliding with anything.
The local helmet seems to be about optimal.
And the price is great.
Thank You Cambodia, again.

Ignore the horseshit in the post above.
You are best ordering from an overseas online vendor and having a good helmet sent here. Shoei, Arai, Shrk etc. . .
Bernard in the bike shop does have Euro standard helmets, but he is very, very pricey.

I guess that's why every single serious F1, Nascar, moto GP, rally driver etc wears 'optimal' Cambodian helmets. Not.Florida wrote:À very "Good" helmet can be very bad. Superman found that out. In a head on

Any why every single trusted world helmet safety standard (Bell, UK, Aus etc) recommends Cambodian helmets. Not.
There is a much greater chance of brain and/or skull damage from crap helmets cracking when your head hits an object (other vehicle, lamppost, tarmac, whatever) than possible neck 'collapse' from the G force or rigidity generated by the helmet.
Your head weighs so much anyway that if you are in a situation where whiplash occurs, you may get injured whether you have a helmet or not.
Except that the helmet's bottom edge can act as a buffer to stop your head whipping sideways or downwards so much, and this can reduce whiplash injuries.
One of the most common head injuries when riding a moto is when you hit or get hit by another vehicle, you come off the bike and slide face down along the road. Plus then possibly impact head first into something.
A crap Cambodian helmet is so weak and flexible (plus being open-face style) that you will suffer bad facial abrasions plus the helmet may split prematurely and not protect you skull at all on impact.
Yes, a helmet adds weight to your head and expensive race helmets are made as light as possible while still being super strong and rigid. But the risk of whiplash injury or 'neck collapse'(?) from the added weight is far outweighed by the risk of possible skull injury from a weak flexible helmet.

Thanks for the tip!Khmerized wrote:The Bike Shop (Google it) can order for you. Hope you're rich mate.
By the way, saw your website and your photos are awesome! I am a photographer my self and I am looking for some photography gig here as an advertising photographer. Can you give me some tips on this? I know you work for Ogilvy right?

Good thing you guys are here to give share your two cents. I never actually expected any sensible advise. Hehehe.
Will try to look for these stores you mentioned.
I am really skeptic about the helmets here. I bought an Index helmet but I suspect it's a knock off. I guess it is. Bought it for 14usd only. Hahaha!
Thanks!

I seriously saw a Cambodian hat pretending to be a helmet split as it fell off the handle bars of a moto. And the comment about it being not full facial is very pertinent. Having the chin protector saved my jaw when a taxi decided to take my out in a big way.
As you are in Sth east Asia Air fairs to Jakarta or BKK are very reasonable and worth it.Many good helmets and bike shops there.
I brought an OZ cert open face one from home as I thought I would be ambling about town at 40 at the most instead of 80+odd on the highway on a big bike so I got a Zuess dirtbike helmet.
Not the best in the world but seemed better than the twistable "lucky" to be alive if you crash brand and the ridiculous sounding Spacecrown??????
Zuess do make very good quality helmets and whist I don't for a minute believe this is one of them I think it's among the best you will get in Camb.
Only issue is it has no visor so a cricket at 80 on the cheek really bloody hurts!

Thanks for the kind words. I indeed work for Ogilvy, but in the business / account management department. Our creative team is quite small and we don't do photography internally.vitvelasquez wrote:Thanks for the tip!Khmerized wrote:The Bike Shop (Google it) can order for you. Hope you're rich mate.

For that, we usually hire a freelancer and a production house together. The photography community in Phnom Penh is quite small, but I don't think finding a good gig is going to be easy. The couple of western dudes who have studios are well known, and the rest are Khmer photogs who are extremely cheap (like 50$/day).... Difficult to make an impact.

$50 a day? OMG! I am guessing this is not for commercial works like products and portraiture shots for lifestyle and commercial projects. Am I wrong?
