All you bike guys, which one would you choose.
The XR will have much better suspension. The FTR has potatoes as shock absorbers, but it's still a reliable bike. I prefer the riding position of the ftr to dirt bikes, and no seat is comfortable after 2 hours. For a few hundred more you could get an 07 or 08 model with far less mileage. I've ridden one everywhere but koh kong, oddar meanchey and rattanakiri, and the only downside is limited grunt on the highway and an undersized fuel tank. They'll do mild dirt bike terrain without too much complaint, but the tyres aren't great in mud. For commuting they're perfect. Swap the wide bars for something narrower with a lower rise and it'll squeeze through just about any traffic jam without clipping mirrors.

I'm thinking about changing to an FTR soon. Do you know what kind of price the 07/08 models are going for?epidemiks wrote:The XR will have much better suspension. Another consideration is license. I don't have a big bike license, I've ridden bigger bikes here before but not regularly. I'm keen to permanently change to a bigger bike but a little wary about license issues. I know some folk have ridden big bikes here for quite a while without issue, but has there been any recent increase in police checking?
I wouldn't be opposed to doing a test here and getting the license but last time I checked it was c. $400. I have a local car driving license & don't have a UK Bike license to convert

Nah, I meant the rough as fuck women in the massage places on Sisowath opposite the port. They are about the only women I can think of who would be impressed by $20.GaryH wrote:haha I assume that's where the gay massage places are?
Looking for something cheap and reliable that I can do runs up and down between PP and SR, looking manly wasn't part of the criteria.
I do own a bright pink polo shirt actually, which ever bike I settle on I'll have to remember never to wear it in conjunction with riding the bike or I might get the wrong kind of attention from some of you 440 boys while doing tough laps on Preah Sisowath
What was grumpy about it? The "Unable to decipher simple English" award goes to Telletubby.TristranandIsolde wrote:Always a cheery fellow, aren't we?
Grumpy old man award to the Lucky Lycan! Haha ...
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
hmmm well thanks for the advice guys, given me a lot to think about.
I was leaning toward the XR simply because I am assuming if I head outside of Phnom Penh I should be able to find some really cool offroad places to ride? The same guy has another FTR that's 3 years newer for $200 extra, but I don't like the colour. The old one is entire black front to back, the newer one has a red tank and some black parts, some red parts, some white parts. It's a pretty goofy looking colour scheme.
When I initially asked this question I said they were both the same so I could get a feel for which is the better bike mechanically.
To be more specific, I am looking at these bikes
2002 FTR $1150
2004 FTR $1225
2002 XR200 $950
These are the 3 bikes I can choose from. All from the same seller

I didn't feel like he was being grumpy at all.
I thought he was making a gay joke about me, which given the style of bikes I'm looking at buying I don't blame him
Oh and I just realised he also has a blue FTR for sale which looks pretty cool I guess. Unsure of what year it is I've just messaged him to ask
I've never really liked the 'feel' of ftrs and would go for the xr for fun factor if nothing else.
Just my own opinion, man.

There's a cheap Hyosung here. But I think the bike is too bulky for Phnom Penh traffic. It'd be worth putting up with traffic difficult on a 800cc+ cruiser style bike like that, but I think it's more trouble than it's worth for a 250. I have ridden that same bike but the 600cc version back home and it wasn't a light bike, the 250 version would be slow
$800
$800
You should consider the Honda Icon with the cool stickers on it. They have teenage couple flashing the peace sign I think, and the ladies will love you for it.

Obviously it's hard to tell from photos, but It looks to me like the petrol tank on the newer red bike is physically bigger than the black/blue ones. Perhaps the tank being too small is something they addressed in later versionsepidemiks wrote:The XR will have much better suspension. I got the feeling from this thread that both bikes would do exactly what I wanted and were pretty much equally reliable and it all really just came down to personal preference. So I bought the black FTR. I think it looked the best.
I don't have a bike bike licence, hasn't been a problem for 6 years, but I'm increasingly interested in not dying, so will be converting my Aus licence soon so insurance actually works.Khmerhamster wrote:I'm thinking about changing to an FTR soon. Any time I've been stopped maybe 3 times in the last 4 years I've just shown my expired 125 licence and that has been enough to wave me on.
Later model FTRs go for around 1600 at the moment, from what I've seen. Brand spankers are 5k fresh from a dealer in Japan.

The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
