Buying a Toyota Rav4
Buying a Toyota Rav4
Looking to buy a new car. I think we have more or less decided on a Rav4. Probably year 2002 or thereabouts.
I have a couple of questions that people can perhaps help with:
1. I have been advised that there's a big difference in fuel economy between the 2WD and 4WD versions. But looking online, here for example https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel ... RAV4.shtml, the difference seems to be quite small, only a couple of miles per gallon. Does that seem correct?
2. What would be the pros and cons and approximate costs of having LPG conversion done?
Would appreciate any other relevant advice re these vehicles.
Cheers,
SD.

LPG conversion for a new system is about $800 for a 50L tank.
Obvs cheaper fuel - about half the price of petrol, am told it is a bit more efficient but don't know about that yet.
Depending on where you live, it can be difficult to find a local LPG pump.
Slight deterioration in power of vehicle, but fairly insignificant.
One point is that you will lose a fair amount of boot space in a Rav. The tank will need to go in the boot. There are also tanks which fit in the spare wheel well, but I think the Ravs have the spare wheel on the back of the car.
I've had 4 cars that ran on gas,
The LPG mileage was about 60% of what I got when they ran on petrol, but they were old systems so you might get a better result with the more modern kits.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Yeah, I thought they would be less efficient. But the guy who installed it insisted the modern system would be more efficient. Time will tell.scoffer wrote:I've had 4 cars that ran on gas,

LPG is less calorific so you'll get 20% less bang!
Also depends what system you're putting in. I think Akira can help with this if you PM him.
He advised me not to do it in my CRV...
I don't think you'll even need the 4WD. Do you live in a boggy farm, then get a proper 4WD with ground clearance.
Anyhoo. The Rav4 is better than the CRV.

I'm looking at a 2001/2 Rav4 vs a 2002 CRV at the moment. Besides the extra space in the CRV, they both looked equally spec'd and reliable. Only driven a CRV though, not sure how the Rav4 handles.
We used to have an old V8 Statesman on dual fuel, and was worth it when city driving on gas compared to petrol.
On a small 2l engine, I don't see much point of an LPG conversion, especially here where lack of service stations, dodgy installations and other headaches like losing luggage space appear to outweigh the benefits.

2002 CRV would be the MK2 I believe. Much better car but still the same crap AWD faux 4WD!
Unless you're doing shit loads of miles there's no point LPGing it in a small capacity engine. How long would it cost to recoup the $800 install fee? For me it'd take at least four years when I'd be ready to replace the car.

Thanks for the ideas. Haven't 100% decided on what we want yet so good to get a few opinions.

I used LPG with second hand cars, an audi quattro then a V6 camry. Big engines so the fuel economy was worth it despite 15-20pc less power (and 10-20% more consumption back then). I wouldn't do it for an engine smaller than 2.5L, it can be a hassle and the lost space is annoying in relatively small car.

As long as petrol price is that low I can't see the point of converting a car to LPG, especially a low displacement engine. Hell I am bringing my 2.5 flat four high output engine to Thailand for head gaskets issue, taking the opportunity to replace the original rings issue prone pistons with forged ones and I let the mechanic convince me to go for bigger ones to gain about 100hp. My car had a terrible mpg record before, I don't even want to think about what my future consumption will be but at 3k+ a liter I couldn't care less .
I doubt just bigger pistons alone would achieve a gain of 100hp. Maybe if you are having a rebore, remap, upgraded injectors and bigger turbo too?
I had a 220bhp Nissan and that what I had to do to gain 100hp, plus uprated brakes and gearbox!
2.5l flat four. Must be a Subaru!

I ran a v6 Tacoma on LPG early this year.
300 miles from a tank of LPG (75l).
240 Miles from a tank of petrol.
LPG far, far cheaper to run. Slight extra cost for more frequent oil changes.

How big was the petrol tank, 40l? Just googled. 80l.Jackal wrote:I ran a v6 Tacoma on LPG early this year.

Either way LPG gives min 20% less mpg. Even more if you've a bad install. (Likely in KOW!) but then it cost less so...
Also, did you buy the Tacoma with the kit already installed. If not how much was the install?

As I read it that's not what he is saying.YaTingPom wrote:How big was the petrol tank, 40l? Just googled. 80l.Jackal wrote:I ran a v6 Tacoma on LPG early this year.

He got more miles (300 vs 240) from a smaller tank (75L vs 80L).
His experience seems to be very different from the 20% less mpg you are suggesting with LPG.
Unless I am reading it wrong... but his experience is similar to what the garage told me when I installed last week.
