KeepVid problemA long time ago I asked for advice here about saving videos to my computer. I got some good answers and found a way to use speeches in my classes without saving videos. But now I want to actually use some videos. The problem is that KeepVid is telling me that I don't have Java installed or it's disabled, ergo I can't use KeepVid. As far as I know I do have Java installed and it's not disabled. What am I doing wrong?

Re: KeepVid problemU didn't specify your OS, should we assume Windows? (God forbid)

Re: KeepVid problemAnd which web browser your using. No need to be too disparaging of Windows, most of the world is still on it.
Re: KeepVid problem
yeah, and most of the world is poor/underprivileged too, but that's not good. Numbers = not the sole determinant of quality In fact, most marketing guys would go the opposite way. New Microsoft keyboard has only 3 keys! CTRL/ALT/DEL. People who steal from banks get jail. Banks who steal from people get bonuses. You gotta love capitalism!
Re: KeepVid problemMy stupid. I have a Mac, using a 4 year old version of OS X 10.5.8, and I use Firefox exclusively, which I just updated recently. I'll try to look for the Java thingie. I've thought about switching to Chrome, but I'm worried that Google is keeping a file on me. Using Chrome will make it that much easier for them...
One more thing: A few months ago I downloaded BetterPrivacy, a Firefox add-on(?) that kills flash cookies. I wonder if that's the problem? Truth. Beauty. Justice.
Re: KeepVid problemTry going out to http://www.java.com/en/ I don't have a Mac, but you should be able to update Java from there. You can test java here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp I don't know if the test is valid for java running outside the browser though.
Regarding Chrome, if you don't have, or don't log into your Google account when online, they shouldn't be getting any more information about you than they would if you were using any other browser. Touched by His Noodly Appendage
Re: KeepVid problemWasn't trying to defend its greatness through numbers, you're right that that is not a good argument for anything, and certainly there's plenty of ways to criticize Windows, just that it isn't very helpful. Also, the "lets knock Windows" party started 10 years ago, it's a bit old.
Disable the Java security add-on in Firefox and see if that helps. Even better, start Firefox in safe mode (disables all add-ons) It will help narrow down the possibilities.
Re: KeepVid problemActually 1984, there are some things I prefer in Windows, but I've only had Ubuntu a week or so, maybe when I know (more) what I'm doing, but I do think that XP is a better OS than 7/Vista, for lots of reasons. I got tired of Microsoft sending me updates which screwed up the system and then never replied to questions.
DH, can't you use a programme to hide your ID from Google/whoever? Like fake IP address or something? People who steal from banks get jail. Banks who steal from people get bonuses. You gotta love capitalism!
Re: KeepVid problemWindows 7 is stable and IMHO far better than XP. It will be interesting in the 4th quarter this year when Windows 8 comes out.
Re: KeepVid problemI agree with the UNIX/Linux is better than Windows sentiment, however we shouldn't lose sight of the fact there are some apps that will only run under Windows and that Microsoft does the Linux community a service by being so attractive to the people who write viruses. UNIX and Linux are much less interesting targets.

Re: KeepVid problem
The new Firefox versions do block older Java plugins, because there have been security issues found with the older Java plugins. Just update the java to current.
Re: KeepVid problemKeepVid is yesterday's news. You need to get Download Helper browser extension (Firefox only). Works like a dream, I use it on both Mac and Windoze.
Re: KeepVid problem
Oh really? If true that could certainly explain my problem (at least this particular problem...) as I just recently did this big Firefox update. But I found the Java 'control panel' and it seems to be telling me that 3 versions of Java are running! I even enabled a 4th version but still no love. When I tried to update Java it told me to use the Mac software update function, which I did, but that tells me no new version is available. Then I hit my head against the wall... Well, guess I'll try preahkaew's suggestion. Thanks pk, I'll let u know if it works. Truth. Beauty. Justice.
Re: KeepVid problemAll those Javas can lead to conflicts, uninstall them all, reboot, then download and install the most recent. It happens sometimes with Java's horrendous updater.
