I'm about to buy one or the other in the next few days.
I'll be using it mainly to read e-books downloaded from torrent sites (like thepiratebay), but have NO PLANS to buy books from Amazon/Barnes & Noble (unless there was a super special book i couldn't find anywhere else).
So, between the 2, is there anything that you think should sway me one way or the other?
I'm leaning towards the Nook, mainly because it has an external SD slot and uses Android OS. The downside is that it's not compatible with as many formats as the Kindle. Can that be changed by rooting it?
Also, if a file happens to be in another format than you want, what are some good converting programs for each device?
Any (and I mean ANY) advice/info/comments are welcome.
Thx.

Use Calibre, free, to convert between formats. No experience with the Nook, love the Kindle touch, don't miss an SD card.

Yeah, that seems to be the most popular choice, probably for a good reason. Damn...

What about googles nexus 7. Do you care about color? Are you going to only use it as an ebook reader or to access other content, ie newspapers etc.
Saw a kindle DO1100 at Sorya for $129

Yeah, not looking for anything other than a/ e-reader that u can read clearly in direct sunlight. Are there different versions of the Kindle Touch (with the e-ink, meaning no LCD backlit screen)? Thanks for all the good info everyone, as I'll have to decide within the next few days.

Possibly this might answer some of your questions about the Kindle

Thanks! Well, it's been decided and acted upon already! I definitely didn't want the Kindle Fire, or any other sort of Tablet. I really wanted one with the E-ink. Went with the Kindle Touch! Wi-Fi, but no 3G service, which isn't available in Cambodia anyways. Paid $120 with 1-day shipping to the States, and a fellow poster is going to be kind enough to bring it over soon enough!

Advice: If the rash persists for more than 2 days, see a doctor. Info: I'm making these posts in my underwear. Comments: I'd really like to get an e-reader, but know very little about the differences.

I had really liked the nexus7 tablet for reading, until I found how easily the screen cracked, and mine is being repaired...but I also use torrents at times, and actually find the plain vanilla old kindle with .mobi extensions to be the easiest to download to. Using Calibre, also, great choice, as it 'translates' mobi to epub and vice versa. But nexus7 had nice price too...and the backlit screen was nice...but I find myself back to using kindle again, however, just fwiw, of all the ereader apps, on android, I found the Aldiko reader worked the best, on any of my android phone or tablet For example, I liked John D. McDonald 'Travis McGee' mysteries, so just found them in bulk, and whisked them thru calibre, so I had them in both .mobi extensions, and downloaded to Kindle, and also in epub, so I downloaded to Nexus7. Only downside of Nexus7, other than fragile screen, might be the fact it was wifi only, no 3G or 4G or any phone hook up....but since the price was so good, I could always setup my smartphone as a wifi point, when I needed it... I'm coming over to Vietam and Cambodia in November, and figured I'd just bring laptop,, and kindle along with... long flight, need lotsa reading material

Calibre is a great tool... if you want, I'll share a dropbox folder with around 500 books in .epub format, rogue is also good for ebooks. I was given a bookeen cybook by a customer and it is a bit small, but fits easily into my pocket and the battery last me 3 or 4 books. C30

I just got a Kindle Touch as well. Previously I had a Sony E-Reader, which I also liked. However, the Kindle is insidious. Despite having only bought a couple of books over a period of years on my Sony (I still have a credit in their bookstore that I never used!), I have bought 5 books in the last month for my Kindle. It's just TOO EASY! I love it.
Anyway, long story short, I'd be up for swapping ebooks. If anyone is interested in feminist texts and pop anthropology, let me know.
