MacBook Pro Repairs

Postby SkyPilot » Sun Dec 24, 2017 3:23 pm

I have a mid 2014 MacBook Pro laptop that won't turn on. I took it to the Apple repair centre and was told I would be contacted after three days when it had been cleaned and assessed. They called me back the next day and told me it wouldn't turn on because the logic board was US but couldn't explain what the issue with the board was. I was also told the battery needed replacement as well and was quoted $458 for the board and $413 for the battery, a total of $871. I am somewhat suss because of the lack of detail and quick turn around time. As far as I'm aware Apple repair centres have diagnostic software that can tell you exactly which component in a laptop has gone US, including in my case which part of a logic board is not working.

Are there any computer techs who can advise me or perhaps refer me to another repair centre where I can get a second opinion. I have been told by a few different Khmers to be very careful with computer shops here in Cambodia as many don't know what they are doing and the chances of getting ripped off are high. It's already cost me $60 just to be told what I already knew and I don't feel like paying another $871 to repair / replace something without any more detail than "it doesn't turn on so it must be a broken logic board".

Thanks in advance for any advice / feedback.

Those prices are horrible. Go to Cana Computers #182, St. 253, close to corner St. 150.
Had battery replaced (MacBook Air) for something like $30, I think. Last week had keyboard replaced to 65 dollar. You won't regret going there. Good luck!

30$ for a Macbook Battery, that's a copy for sure ;-)

At the apple store they charge that for a USB cable.

It's Apple, intended to be thrown away after the first year. How dare you to use it more then 3 years ? Buy new ! :-)

Yup, most likely; for an almost 8 year old computer I thought it wasn't a bad deal though. I seem to remember they called it refurbished. But, whatever, it works. I've had the keyboard replaced a couple of years ago, by Young something, an official Apple repair place in Phnom Penh and they charged $199 for it.

Cana it is.

Out of curiosity, was it an authorised Apple repair centre you went to? I was under the impression one didn't exist here. Needing some urgent repairs to my 2015 MacBook. Cheers

Pretty sure uniyoung is authorised.
They have repaired my MacBook previously and I’ve been happy with price and service. They are next to central market.

Btw, I ended up going to GTC Computers yesterday purely because it was closer to where I lived. New battery & keyboard replaced for my MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) for $150. Was all done within a 2hrs so it worked out well. Staff were knowledgable about Apple. Highly recommended.

I tried Uni Young but they said they don't repair faulty parts (the logic board ?? in my case) but only replace same as the Apple repair centre. Cana Computers are not an Apple repair centre as far as I'm aware but they were helpful. They looked at it and said the board was US but not specifically whether it could be repaired which I was hoping would be the outcome. They also said the screen was no good so it was probably not worth repairing it ?? I'm going to do a few checks myself as I can't understand how so many major parts could be US when there was very little sign from what I could see of internal water damage except for a tiny bit of corrosion on one very small part of the board. I'll also try GTC and see what they have to say and will let you know how it turns out.
