No more registering of SIMs?
No more registering of SIMs?
On the BKK Air flight I was given a free SIM and it was suggested that new customers register at Smart booth at airport. I did not but put it in my phone. It shows it's working and the brochure said something about free this and that credit. But SMSs don't send. I went into Smart office and instructions/ policies. were confusing.

Interesting. I got an SMS from Smart a few weeks ago saying "We don't have your personal details, please go to a store to register," even though I registered with my passport a few years ago when I got the card (back when Smart was Hello).

Any idea if there is a time limit on sim's with no activity. I've got a Celtel one in my ipad unused for 5 months, it would be pretty useful if I only have to pay in some credit next month and it works again.

I believe there is a time limit. If you are away for extended periods, best to leave your SIM with a trusted friend and have them top up. Ask your telecom company for the rules.
I was surprised to learn that Smart apparently does not allow foreigners to keep their SIMs active for more than X months (I think it was 6). At least that's what staff told me at Smart office in Sorya. I asked them if I could have a friend top up for me if out of the country, or call a number and extend the validity ( as I did when Smart was Hello over a year ago). They told me "You cannot because you are a foreigner."
Is this normal for Cambodian telecom companies or does this have something to do with foriegn ownership of Smart. Or does this have something to do with my getting a free SIM on the flight in?
In any case what is the solution to get a prepaid SIM card that actually lasts for years?
