New laptop recommendations
had my zen book ux305 for about a year now, love it extremely portable at 1.17 kg - only negative for me, the speakers are not the greatest, but I find it better to watch porn with earphones especially when you are on public transport
I was looking at cheap new laptops, but it was a joke.
In UK, my familly get i7 core, toshiba laptops. In nam, u get atom - mobile phone processors at 300$
i bought a 2009 NEC Japan only i5, 2.8ghz, 4 gb ram, 108gb rom for 200$.
stupidly expensive by UK standards, but its a class act. jap equivalent of a mac i guess

Many i5s are better than many i7s, don't let the number confuse you... Some chips are more equal than others.

True on the numbers, also depends what you're using it for. The i7s are good for multithreading but a lot of programs can't/don't use it.

Went to V tech to check out the Zen notebook.
Typical Cambodian experience -
Have you got one?
Yes.
Can I see it?
Not here.
Oh, I want to buy and would like to see first.
Can bring.
Ok. How long?
30 minutes.
Oh I am busy now I will come back tomorrow.
Etc
The lad comes over after I've had that pretty much verbatim exchange with one of the girls.
He explains it is not in the shop but somewhere else. No shit?
Then if they bring it it is in a box wrapped in plastic. No shit?
But if I want to see it they have to take it out if the box. No shit?
And if they do that I have to buy it. You're shittin me?
Oh no, he is serious. Cambodian people won't think it is new if they take it out if the box and so if they open it up for me to see then I have to buy. But what if... as I walk out the door.
So still on the hunt.

There is a shop at Aeon where all the recent most popular laptops are on display, maybe they have the one you are looking for there. It's expensive for smaller shops to have a unit on display, they are often beat up by customers and has to be sold at discount. This shop is probably picking it up at an import storage facility somewhere.

Not a big fan of V-tech. On the other side of town near the Russian market you have a similar shop, Chantra Computer Shop. They always have various models on display. If you spot it on their website, give them a call to check they display it in store (even better have a Khmer friend call them). I agree with the poster above me, visit big stores like Anana, PTC, and maybe Aeon (haven't been there in ages).

I went there (Chantra) a few weeks ago and had the same spiel happen to me. I wasn't quite ready to pull the trigger anyways so it didn't bother me. Either way, the "wait 30 minutes while we get it" thing is common in a lot of shops (even PTC) and doesn't only apply to computer sellers. It seemed like chantra were willing to let me handle it though (I said that's why I wanted to see it and they didn't mind, but it would take 30 mins to get it. Oh, and they only had the gold colour...).

But even when they get it for you (in 30', which always turns out longer....)
And even if they allow you to unbox it.
You still can't use it 99% of the time, since most laptops bought new will boot from an image on the SSD / hard drive and the machine will ask some questions (computer name, username, password, etc) and install Windows and bloatware accordingly. Only the stupidest seller will allow you to enter this info into the machine.
Best is to browse the web for reviews (I like the site notebookcheck.com a lot, esp. the extensive reviews where they measure the screen too) and then make your purchase. Good luck with the hunt.

I'm not scared of Aeon, it's just a tiny little provincial shopping center, it's not gonna eat you up, and it'd be real hard to get lost there, you wanna see scary huge malls? go to Houston, Texas or something.
Not a problem, BIOS displays hardware info and that should be enough.Kachang wrote:But even when they get it for you (in 30', which always turns out longer....)

My problem with Anana and PTC is the constant order to sit down.

Buy whatever Asus product fits your requirements and budget, from wherever sells it cheapest (as long as it is a legit original product). Also don't get confused (as some here seemed to) between Asus and Acer. The former are great, the latter are shit.

My first Acer, a 10.1 inch screen, was brilliant.
The second, a 14', was also very good, still being used by my brother 6 years later.
Then I bought a 17" V5...great sound, generally very good wrt most other aspects...
But the touchpad...
Next time, ASUS.

I use a Logitech wireless. Never have liked touch pads especially with my fumble fingers.vladimir wrote:
