Can anyone tell me if I would need to commit to a six month contract or similar if getting opennet at home? What about other isp ....can it be for a month or two?

So, a year on, what are the current thoughts on 4G vs FTTH?
Don't want to do ADSL any more, possible alternatives are Smart@home or OpenNet F6/9 FTTH. Anyone have experience with either in the western end of the city, near the airport?
Right now on my phone a Smart 4G speedtest says 3.6Mbps download, 22.8 Mbps upload and 21ms ping. But a tethered PC has ping times to google DNS varying between 70ms and several 10s of seconds and Netflix is freezing and buffering every few minutes. So Smart@home isn't looking likely to be too clever. But at the cheap end of the internet pool in Cambodia everything sucks; what is least sucky this month?

Power cuts are a pain in some parts and 4g is so cheap right now that i would think you could get 4g internet with say BOTH Cellcard and Smart (for if one of them went down) and it would still work out cheaper than fixed line IF you are not into streaming much.
$8 for 80GB per month with Cellcard and Unlimited Youtube with Metfone for $3 bucks a month?
So is fixed line internet going the way of the dodo, or is the service abit patchy?

With Smart I can currently get 10Gb (valid for up to 1 week) for $1 (*1333*7#) which is pretty good price-wise, but like ADSL, the performance is very variable. Neither Opennet or Digi can answer simple questions like
Is my house in your FTTH coverage area?
Can I try FTTH for a month and if it's as crap as your ADSL cancel without incurring the $60/$50 charge for bailing early on the 2/1 year minimum contract?
(Opennet) Can I have a static IP and if so, how much does it cost?
Is your ONU just a modem or does it include routing functionality? AKA will I have to fight with double NAT? OK, this one is a little bit technical
In the meantime tethering on 4G is mostly OK upstairs, hopeless downstairs where the signal is weaker.

I prepay DIGI 6 months at a time for fibre and have few issues. When I paid monthly I always had connection issues.

Sorted now. It took 2 weeks to get them to finish the installation and then about 4 days to find someone at technical support who understood what a fixed IP address was and to configure my ONU accordingly. I'm impressed with the actual internet performance so far.

Just upgraded my old Digi package from the $16 to the $20/month, had been on the old package for a while and stuck on the old tariff which I think was 5Mb/s Now getting 9Mb/s. That's 5 less beers I get to drink/month from now on. Who says computers are bad for you.

I don’t hear so much bitching about ISP’s anymore.
IMO the major players have upped their game a lot in the past 5 years. You can now get pretty reliable, quick internet here for little money.
Digi, Opennet & Kingtel seem to be all offering similar speeds for similar prices and with mobile internet being a cheap as chips even power cuts don’t knock us offline. Can’t say I miss the old days of Ezecom and MekongNet with $80 a month contracts and fortnight long outages.

I just picked up the new Smart @ Home wifi router. It's been working great. No problem watching Netflix through Chromecast, downloading ect. It was $54 all-in for three months up front - plus you own the modem and can move the modem anywhere that has Smart service. Just plug it in and it's good to go. Its also faster than regular 4g smart phone Sims, speed testing between 4g on my phone and the WiFi the modem seems faster for sure. 10Mbps and 500 GB a month that cap. I'm quite happy with it. Took ten minutes at the Smart shop @ Soriya.

They must have upped the cap; it was 300GB a couple of months ago.kansaicanuck wrote: 10Mbps and 500 GB a month that cap. I'm quite happy with it.

To be honest I never really seen it in fine print but they clearly said 500 GB. 300 could get a bit tight with lots of streaming / downloading. Im gonna check that out.walkjivefly wrote:They must have upped the cap; it was 300GB a couple of months ago.kansaicanuck wrote: 10Mbps and 500 GB a month that cap. I'm quite happy with it.

In 2004 I had my first internet connection by PPCTV (over cable tv.) The connection was ridiculous slow and expensive. Ad that time a 512Kb/s line with unlimited download costed more than $600 a month. I had a 356Kb/s line for more dan $300 a month. That was the reason I moved to the Philippines, there I got 2Mb/s for $50.
