The conclusion to the story:
I took it to PSC on str. 184, they were able to help me copy all the contents of my user profile from the hard drive, getting around the user password using a program called "Miniboot". They charged me $10 for it. It took a lot longer to copy the files than they expected, though.
For repairing the old computer, it was really delayed, it took them a long time to get back to me about whether they could fix it or not. But finally they came back to me ans said they can't repair it.
But at least I got all of the files from my old computer! Thanks to PSC.
motherboard destroyed and accessing hard drive
I would say it was just password protected then, not encrypted.
All of the files were password protected, but a sub-set of them were encrypted. Once I had access to all the files, I was able to decrypt the encypted ones using the same software.
