You should check out Chantra, they have loads of set ups in your price range. As said already, it doesn't sound like you are using any programs that need much power. You can get a pretty powerful touch screen desktop for a few hundred dollars.LoneStar wrote:Hello all,
I went to Pacific computer a few days ago to purchase a computer. It has been my experience in the past that they are a bit cheaper than some other places. Now, I am not computer illiterate....but unless you build them, there is no way to decipher what parts you should be buying as they change so quickly.
Unfortunately, there was not a salesman there able to.....do what a salesman does, and competently explain the differences to me.
My price range is 500-600 for a new desktop, although I am not really sure I need to spend that much. I don't do any gaming and only use it for surfing, a bit of work, and I like to stream from my computer to my TV.
Can anyone give me some advice on what I should be looking for? I really would appreciate having some sort of road map to go back in there with.
Thanks,
Greg

Everything spec'd less, and you'll regret it within 2 years. The Window Licker wrote:So, basically, way over-spec'd for your needs?
Without gaming need, you may have considered to drop the nVidia card in favour of the i3 build-in HD graphics.
i'd still want more ram for windows 10 though, maybe add an extra 8gb stick to get 12gb total.
Thanks Jim,'
You really need that much to run Windows 10 effectively?
I may have over spec'ed.....a bit, but I would rather overdo it than under do it.

Adding an SSD for the OS will have more influence on the performance than adding another 8 GB of RAM.JimSocks wrote:i'd still want more ram for windows 10 though, maybe add an extra 8gb stick to get 12gb total.
Don't worry, you PC will work just fine, unless you will do some 3D designing or play hefty 3D games.LoneStar wrote:Thanks Jim,'

Just make sure you connect your PC through a UPS, or a power cut / surge might fry one the chips on your motherboard.

Greg, that is not an over spec'd computer unless all you are trying to do is play solitaire....
I'd go as far to say for the price, it should have come with more RAM, but I do remember how much more expensive electronics were there.

Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.
