Help with building a computer
Hello all,
I went to Pacific computer a few days ago to purchase a computer. It has been my experience in the past that they are a bit cheaper than some other places. Now, I am not computer illiterate....but unless you build them, there is no way to decipher what parts you should be buying as they change so quickly.
Unfortunately, there was not a salesman there able to.....do what a salesman does, and competently explain the differences to me.
My price range is 500-600 for a new desktop, although I am not really sure I need to spend that much. I don't do any gaming and only use it for surfing, a bit of work, and I like to stream from my computer to my TV.
Can anyone give me some advice on what I should be looking for? I really would appreciate having some sort of road map to go back in there with.
Thanks,
Greg

Pentium 4, 2 GB RAM, drive size depending on how much you want to store, cheapest graphics card and any compatible motherboard should do you just fine with Windows 7. Even from a shop that shouldn't be more than $200-$300 nowadays. Do bargain, nobody buys this sort of hardware anymore. I would hesitate to spend more than $100 on a system like that.
You could find what you need for much less if you scout the usual for sale groups on Facebook. If you want more stuff running you will need something more powerful than a P4 because of its 2G RAM limitation.
Stay clear from later versions of Windows since their requirements to run them bring up cost substantially.

I could do with a computer or laptop that costs no more than 200. I never know what any are worth when second hand and what I need to be sure to avoid.

Here's a laptop posted yesterday with i5 and 4 GB RAM for $200. You just have to be on the lookout, really.violet wrote:I could do with a computer or laptop that costs no more than 200. I never know what any are worth when second hand and what I need to be sure to avoid.

Take Alexandra's advise but spend a bit of money on the bits you'll be noticing every day - the speakers, keyboard, mouse and screen.
EDIT: spelling
EDIT 2: If you want the computer, and programs generally, to load fast then get an SSD. If you want that and lots of storage space then get an SSD for the operating system but also have a standard spinny disk hdd.

Here's a desktop for $80 which I think is worth a look. Put a bigger screen on it and mission accomplished. https://m.facebook.com/groups/312660465 ... 3193956528
