Anyone having trouble with OpenNet?
Sounds like Cootel may be a good deal... if it's working well for you.
It just took me slightly more than 4 minutes to download an 8 MB document on OpenNet, which is 266 Mbps, or only 13% of their advertised speed of 2Mbps.
According to Cootel website, for Home Silver and Home Gold, they have speeds up to 15 Mbps for up to $37 per month.
What's the difference between ADSL and fiber?

I'm guessing that fibre optic is quicker?
I think Openet's cheapest deal was 4 mbps ADSL, whereas Cootel is advertised as 6 mbps fibre optic - $13.2 per month x 6 months, 1 month free, $20 deposit, and you pay for the router, or buy one yourself.
Fug knows what the connection's gonna be like in a couple of months though?

Maybe OpenNet upped it to 4 Mbps for $12 per month, and I just didn't even realize it. As I mentioned the actual speed is more like 266 Mbps. Honestly, it's so bad I rarely even use it any more- I just use Cellcard. Only my partner who also lives here uses the OpenNet connection.
You're right, these companies seem to have a way of starting off well and then quickly going downhill.
It would be good to hear from any other forum members about what ISP they are using.

Coupla things - you're probably not getting 266Mbps I think you meant to put a k there.
Also, download speeds are measured in Mbps (small b which is a bit) and your file size is in MB (big B which is a byte). Bytes are 8 times bigger than bits so you need to account for that when calculating speed.
Try a speed test and see what results you get http://openspeedtest.com/

fibre is not distance sensitive like copper based ADSL

I use opennet , although only for 2 months now, I upped to 10 Mbs and have mostly exceptional speeds although it does dip once in awhile but usually picks up right away after when I load a new page.
Yeah you're right it should have been 266 kbps. And yes I know that speeds are measured in bits per second, which is 8x more than bytes per second.1984 wrote:Coupla things - you're probably not getting 266Mbps I think you meant to put a k there.

If you had read my previous post, i downloaded an 8 MB document in sloghtly more than 4 minutes. 2 MB per minute=33 kilobytes per second, which equals 266 kilobits per second as a speed.
Believe me, it's slow. It's not close to 2 Mbps.
I have to say, the more I think about it, the more I think OpenNet $12 per month is a disaster.
I've certainly had it with OpenNet. This early evening it was terrible.
same here, I keep on using my phone as a hotspot, the only way to work online. Big data is saving the day once again.
I think that the opennet low cost formula is indeed a disaster, I normally take the next best option which used to be much better but the nephew who reset up the line before our arrival typically went for the cheapest offering without bothering to look further.

I've been using OpenNet for a couple of months now and so far I've not had any major problems (casual web surfing, YouTube, Netflix etc), that was up until I had to reformat my laptop and re-install Windows (which meant me (fresh) downloading and re-installing certain programs)
First up was Kaspersky Internet Security. Their website was amazingly slow (even just getting to the download page) - I tried several times over several days and after many attempts, finally managed to download the installer, but to just download the intstaller file was horrifically slow. I ended up tethering off of my Metfone sim card just to download the intallation files. (The Kaspersky website loaded fine from my tethered connection)
I'm now having trouble downloading installation files from a program called Cinema 4D. It downloads at about 10-20kbps (and tells me the 3GB download will take several days!) Yet when I tether via my Metfone phone, I'm told it will take a couple of hours (tethering from a phone!!)
I'd like to think I'm reaonably tech-savvy and have messed around with many of the settings in my router, but nothing seems to make any difference. All I can think is that Opennet throttles certian downloads from certain servers for certain reasons??
Net Neutrality certainly doesn't exist in Cambodia!
I'm baffled by the whole experince to be honest. It seems to me that OpenNet gives full bandwith to common sites and servers while drastically slowing down access to sites and servers it deems Cambodians are unlikely to use.??

I have had somewhat similar issues with streaming certain videos/gifs. I suspect it has to do with which sites use html5. For example, pornhub uses html5 and streams like crap when it does play, while Xvid does not and streams nearly perfect 720p with no buffering issues.Xandreu wrote:I've been using OpenNet for a couple of months now and so far I've not had any major problems (casual web surfing, YouTube, Netflix etc), that was up until I had to reformat my laptop and re-install Windows (which meant me (fresh) downloading and re-installing certain programs)

Yes, that is true, though you have to realize, you share the single fiber with all the participants in your area, due to the technology being used. It is somewhat the fiber equivalent of token ring. AND the technology implies, that, if a rogue node is involved, your connection sucks.drwahwah wrote:fibre is not distance sensitive like copper based ADSL
Western fiber connections tend to be star distribution. The digi FTTH is more a long chain, with all the participants in the chain, and each participant in the chain with an active node. One node down and the rest of the chain behind that node stops working.
Yes, they have, though their fiber is only available in the more central parts of PP.drwahwah wrote:Digi have Special promotion on now and have 8mb Fibre (FTTH) $15.99 month with free install & free month if pay months
If it was you who changed the things on your side (reinstall), why should it be OpenNet, who created the problem ?Xandreu wrote:I've been using OpenNet for a couple of months now and so far I've not had any major problems (casual web surfing, YouTube, Netflix etc), that was up until I had to reformat my laptop and re-install Windows (which meant me (fresh) downloading and re-installing certain programs)

Looks to me, you went from bad to worse, mangling your settings in the router, whereas the problem is probably located in your PC. You might need to be more tech-savy to solve this on your side.....
