So, what's the best bet for a tablet at around $200? This would be for a kid who also wants a decent sized screen. Would go to $250 if it meant a something substantially better.
So many options on the market at the moment so I'm wondering if anybody happens to have been looking recently.
Cheers
$200 ish tablet
Best bang for your buck would probably be a Huawei mediapad. Think the M5 with a 10.8" screen is somewhere around $350, so a m3 should be considerably cheaper.
I got one of the older 3g model Mediapads well over 18 months ago for $150 new, still going strong.

What will they be doing with it ? If it is just for like watching YouTube, FaceBook and games you will find tablets rather fragile. I would suggest a good TV box with a wireless game controller they can do all that stuff. If you need something that is more portable then get the most rugged case that you can get and tho I despise Apple they are rather fool proof and hard to make crash and less prone to spyware etc.

I asked almost the same question about a tablet just a month or so ago, I was pointed towards a Samsung Galaxy Tab E 9.6 thingy.
Unfortunately I have not had a chance to get back to Phnom Penh in the past month, so have not looked around further than a few random Googles

Amazon's Fire HD 10 at $159 is good value. Nice big plastic buffer around it for protection
Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. Ipads do come recommended, and the devices are solidly made with a good look but I'd rather be on the Google store than Apple's. The Amazon tablet has is also good but apparently will not stop pushing Prime at you.
The kid will likely game on it. I agree gaming on the big screen is better but we already have a PC and PS4, part of the point of the tablet is to get him off those when I want to use them - and I'll get him onto some educational, reading, maths apps etc. (If you know any good ones, let me know.)
I'll be taking a look at the Media Pad and Mi Pad 4 and let you know how it goes.

It seems the Mi Pad 4 is not in the country yet so at the moment I'm considering the Galaxy Tab: http://koungy.com/product/galaxy-tab-a-8-0-2017/ or the Huawei Media Pad [urlhttp://koungy.com/product/mediapad-t3-10/[/url]

I'm not sure if you got your tablet yet, but I would recommend Xiaomi's tablet too because they make great stuff. In another thread someone said gearbest.com will ship to Cambodia. Here's a link to the tablet: https://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_ ... id=1349303
You can see it has a great screen resolution and a good processor. You won't find a comparable Samsung tablet at this price. The snapdragon 660 will be able to run basically all the games out there but not at the highest quality graphics settings. For example, my phone is 1920x1080 with a snapdragon 636 and it runs PUBG Mobile on low but with an excellent framerate. With the 660 you may be able to achieve medium settings on pubg with an okayish framerate but low settings look fine any way. Any kid would be happy just to play games.
What games are you looking to play?
EDIT: By the way, I lived in China for about a year and also was intrigued by those Chuwi hybrid computers. They are trash and have little resell value. I ended up giving mine away. They're trash because the keyboard docks are awful to use and their processors are too slow. If they were a little faster and the keyboard didn't suck then I would have loved it.
At the end of this year Microsoft is going to start selling a budget version of the Surface tablet and it might be cool. When I say budget, keep in mind it's still a Microsoft brand piece of kit so it's going to be expensive still. I think they start at $600.

around black friday and christmas, the 10 inch fire tablets usually go on sale for $100-120 ish in the states. i don't play games on my tablets. just youtube, and watch movies, and those amazon tablets are fine for that. i find when I buy electronics for my peoples in cambodia, they generally break it in about a year so i'm jaded when it comes to buying expensive phones, tablets, laptops for them.
