Tips for first time flashing a phone?

Hi.

I'm going to have a go at flashing an Android phone but would appreciate tips from those who have experience. I'd like to know:

    Any tips of your own
Best software to use for the process
Good online sources for instructions, tips etc.
ROMs that are as close to Googles unmolested version of Android
Once you've flashed the device, is updating your own/manual responsibility or can it be set up to get updates?
Is Google Play store still accessible?
Anything you can't do with a flashed phone?

Cheers

The place to get all the information you need is here ---> https://forum.xda-developers.com/
Input the make and model of your specific phone
then select ---> Roms, kernals, recoveries and other development
1st install the TWRP (Team Win Recovery Program) for you specific phone. This is usually done using ADB Fastboot from a computer tho there are exceptions for some specific phones to install TWRP with software to your phone without a computer.

2nd download the Rom of you choice for your exact phone and copy it in you phones memory or SD card.

3rd download the GAPP, onto phone memory or SD card, for your phone these are all the google stuff the one you download is by which version of android your new Rom is based on and the amout of google stuff you want. (I recommend you use the nano version as it has the least bloatware and intrusions from google.)

4th boot into TWRP recovery and BACK UP YOUR CURRENT ROM then install the ROM as per the ROM instructions ( some require you to wipe your phone first)

5th then still from TWRP install your chosen GAPPS

6th then you can choose to ROOT your phone for even more control and options. This can usually be done from the newer TWRP program itself without additional app follow the instructions from your choosen
ROM.

It seems confussing at first but is really very simple to do. If you need more help let me know your specific phone and model and I'll help if I can. I've done it dozens of time.

I should have mentioned that the applications from google store etc will need to be reinstalled. It can make it easier if you have them backed up by google store then they will be automatically reinstalled.
Good luck there are some great Roms for many phones and they can update your phone to better than new and with the latest Android Pie operation system.

Ok, so I have a bit of an obscure phone that I want to experiment on it says it's a Samsung G1701 (seen somewhere else that calls it a Maya systems jetfon) made for a HK based company. No one has bothered to make a ROM for it. How would I go about estimating which one would be a good fit?

There's all sorts of specs here: http://phonedb.net/index.php?m=device&id=13674&c=glocalme_maya_system_jetfon_dual_sim_td-lte_g1701

Sorry, never heard of it. Your going to have to do some research to find a rom for this phone, but pretty unlikely that you will find one.

Don't be tempted to flash something which is not for your exact model of phone. If you do you have a high chance of bricking the phone.

Also, you asked about any downsides. Some apps (esp. banking apps, eg: Sathapana, AMK, etc) won't run if you root your phone (but are fine with an unrooted custom ROM).

Ok, the two phones I was looking at flashing don't have ROMs made for them. If I want to make changes to manufacturer-installed apps etc, can I root it instead? What else can I do with root privileges?

I don't use banking apps and both phones are "spares" so if I screw it up it's no big loss.

Do a search on google lots of info there.

I would advise against using programs like kingoroot and others that root without a computer.

Check to see if there is a TWRP recovery for the phones so that you can create backups so you have a better chance of repairing any F'ups.

Research seems to be that if you're not using a device that's widely sold and for which specific procedures have been created - then you're out of luck.

No ROMs have been made. Root access is advised for adding TWRP but "The procedure for rooting an Android phone or tablet varies from device to device, based on its version of Android as well as any manufacturer or carrier-specific restrictions placed in its firmware."

So if no ones dealt with this then you're not going far.

It's shame as it's these odd phones probably stand to gain the most from rooting/flashing.

yeah, most ROMs and TWRP are created by small groups or individuals for donations so if there is not an audience then not much of a reason to put in all the work to create them.
Also some manufacturers don't share their operation systems to be modified which makes it difficult as well

That's a shame. I was hoping there was some generic version of Android that would work on most devices but it seems there are too many unique device drivers that you have to hunt down. It would be great if there was a way to sort out these not great phones. Better of just flogging them for a few dollars.

The stock Android works, but could be lacking the proper drivers, so you have no screen/touch, no wifi, no phone, no sim and no storage device. And probably a lot of sensors aren't going to work either.
That is where the trick is.
