Measuring distance walked with Google maps

Post by spitthedog » Wed Jul 17, 2019 8:30 am

Looking to find out what average distance i walk on a 9 hour shift tomorrow. Is Google Maps up to the job as far as accuracy go's or is there a better app?

Don't want nothing fancy , just accurate and hopefully something that wont eat too much into my mobile data plan.

Cheers

You basically just want the total distance covered, right? Not a mapping of it?

Your phone might have that already on it - it's in the iPhone Health ap.

Google maps works if you are outside. Indoors won’t work at all. Top left menu (the 3 line one) and called timeline.

Just a pedometer app would track all your steps.

Google maps won’t be accurate.

Measure the part of the coastline of the UK on google maps. Now do it with a tape measure. It’ll be two very different measurements.

Get a pedometer (APLE sell them) or a Fitbit/IWatch etc.

Stepz is a good free app too, but as Migs said, if you have an iphone the health app comes already installed and does the job.

I've noticed with Map My Ride that results vary depending on internet health. On good days it tracks very precisely and accurately. On bad days it has me cycling across the Mekong in a straight line, but not over a bridge. Jesus.

Vaguely related note, Waze, great route-finding app, makes Google maps look like a dinosaur

The Fitbit is a watch that keeps track of how far you walk etc. You can also download the Fitbit app for an android phone so it can work the same way as the watch.
from the fitbit web page : https://fitbit.fileplanet.com/apk
"Looking to keep record of your physical activity and eating habits? With Fitbit, you can track all that and even your sleep schedule. This gives you the ideal method for health improvement because as the saying goes, you can't improve what you can't measure. In general, the most optimal route for using the app will be alongside a Fitbit product. This makes the tracking much easier, and the data gets sent over from the device to your app where it records the information. Some activity recorded throughout the day includes the number of steps taken, the stairs climbed and the calories burned.

Aside from physical activity measurement, Fitbit also looks at how much water you drank and the food eaten. In addition, the app makes a daily recommendation for how much water you should consume. Every time you consume a glass of water, you may want to note it on Fitbit. The app also becomes a good weight loss measurement tracker because it recommends a daily number of calories that you should not go over within a day. You write down the food eaten, and it will track your weight loss progress. In fact, the app does a good job making your health efforts more fun.

In short, this app becomes the central tracker of your weight loss efforts. If you kept a tedious weight loss journal in the past, Fitbit will do it more effortlessly. The app promotes healthy habits, but it lets you control everything about your health from your physical activity to water consumption and eating habits. "
