Med student arrested
[7 photos]
-The suspect was arrested in a Wing money transfer office, located on Hanoi Street, Phnom Penh Tmey Commune, Sen Sok District, while picking up money transferred to him by the owner of Prime Restaurant and Cafe.
-The arrest followed a police sting on the morning of the 28th of July in which more than 20 WING offices in Sen Sok District and Tuol Kok District were staked out by both police and military police after the restaurant owner, collaborating with police, had agreed to send the suspect the $5,000 he demanded.
-Just after 11:00 am, the suspect appeared at the WING office on Hanoi Street to pick up the money sent him, and was arrested by military police lying in wait.
-Police, after questioning the suspect, identified him as Tai Sopheap, a 22 year old 3rd year medical student at Phnom Penh International University, who previously had worked as a security guard for a private firm.
A recap of the events follows:
- At 11:30 am, 26th of July, 2014, a man on a motorbike rides up to the security guard of the Prime Restaurant and Cafe and hands him a gift wrapped present. He tells the guard it is for the restaurant owner. When it is unwrapped, a Nokia phone box is seen, but inside the box is a dilapidated grenade. A hubbub ensues, and police and military police arrive to conduct an investigation. They learn that the suspect who had sent the grenade had demanded $5,000 by phone.
-Immediately, police investigators focus in on the former manager of the restaurant who had quit his job 10 days earlier. Military police arrest him on the 27th of July, 2014. After interrogating him, however, they determine he is not involved in the matter and is released.
-While the former manager is in police custody, the hotel owner receives another phone call demanding $5,000.
-Police ask Wing to collaborate with them as they set up a sting whereby money sent by the restaurant owner is to be paid out to whoever comes to pick it up. Non-military police stake out the more than 20 WING offices in Tuol Kok District, while military police stake out the more than 20 WING offices in Sen Sok District.
-At 11:00 am, the 28th of July, 2014, a man appears at the WING office on Hanoi Street in Sen Sok District to pick up the money sent by the restaurant owner, and he is arrested by military police.
-The suspect is escorted by police to the university where he studied before is taken back to the WING office. There he is asked to mimic his actions picking up the money transfer.
-A police source stated that the suspect had acted alone in his extortion bid, and the non-functioning grenade had been retrieved from his ancestral home in the countryside. The suspect was neither a hardened criminal with a past, nor was he a part of a criminal gang.
-The suspect is taken by military police to military police headquarters in Phnom Penh where he is being held until his court appearance.

Kudos for the updates, Porky.
I can't believe how this blackmailer has been such a noob, especially when his little grenade stunt got covered by some of the most read media outlets... or is he a scapegoat? Was used to retrieve the money and get the blame if he got caught?

Remarkably good police work, getting MPs to stake out 20 Wing offices.Sounds too good to be true doesn't it? Or else the restaurant owner is very well connected or paid a big reward. What did happen to the 5 large?
