Kampong Chnung Province: Displayed prominently in a manner designed to attract, 3 skinned and gutted civets were seen strung up for sale along National Highway #5 in an area of Ou Sondun Village, in the Tuek Hout Commune of Rolea B’ier District, on the morning of the 27th of April – without any fear of, or interference from, authorities trained in these matters.
As it appeared to be in violation of the laws protecting endangered species, the Koh Santepheap decided to take some pictures of two of the civets slung from a pole and available to the casual wayfarer. But when our camera was raised for some shots, the vendors, suddenly alerted as to what was happening, bolted and refused to be interviewed.
One person living nearby stated that denizens of the forest such as wild rabbits, snakes, birds of varying species, pigs and civets were seen there practically every morning, and that by 8 or 9 they would all be sold. As for today, an entire collection of secured birds had sold out earlier in the morning. However, authorities with expertise in these matters were never seen to come down to make an arrest or to prohibit this activity.
Of the 3 civets spotted today, 2 were suspended openly along a national highway while the 3rd civet was propped up in a shanty off the road. Each civet was selling for only 50,000 riel ($12.50). It may be recalled that this market in wild meat thrives at its busiest along the border between Kampong Chnung and Pursat Provinces.
*called “Kla Trey” here in Khmer, which translates as “fish cat.” seems to be the Khmer name for both the large spotted civet (viverra megaspila) and the large Indian civet (Viverra zibetha).
