How do we know if we've contracted dengue?
There's no point starting or restarting a discussion about Cambodian doctors but rumor has it that
everyone who consults a Cambodian doctor is diagnosed with typhoid and prescribed a vast mountain
of pharmaceuticals. A renowned Swiss surgeon has much to say on the subject of Cambodian
medical standards.

Rumors say all sorts of things... what is your point? And where is the link to the doc's comments?

When I came down with the symptoms in 2006-massive joint and head pains plus a total lack of energy- it was correctly diagnosed as dengue by the Naga Clinic and confirmed by a blood test which showed a lowered white blood cell count.
There is no effective treatment. I was prescribed painkillers and travel sickness pills to relieve the symptoms. When a rash appears on your feet after about a week, you are over the worst and on the way to recovery.

Agree, blood test the only way to find out.
Don't bother with the Swiss surgeon, he thinks dengue is committing genocide on Cambodia's children.

Yep. I wouldn't have known i had it but for the rash. I was in Bali, and just thought i was dehydrated and hung over from drinking everyday in the sun. I had a really mild case.
Seemed it was hit or miss. Many people were hospitalized and even heard of a few locals dying around the same time.
The baby daughter is getting over dengue, luckily.
And the khmers even understand that the second dose is more dangerous than the first.
They have even bought a can of spray to kill the mozzies in the house which of course has no insect sceens.
But with the amount of water lying in the provinces one cant avoid the mosquitos.
I wouldnt bag dr beat,he has saved more childrens lives than any cambodian government initiative will ever do.

Self-diagnosing dengue has become much more difficult with a recent upsurge in cases of chikungunya, which has very similar symptoms, is transmitted by the same mosquito, and is similarly difficult to treat, although fortunately its effects are considerably less severe than dengue. So how are the dengue death-toll figures skewed by a non-fatal viral infection? The Post wrote:Dengue death tally skewed by CHIKV

Although a completely different virus, it is often confused with dengue, as the symptoms are similar and the species of the mosquito is the same, he said.
However, dengue symptoms tended to be more severe, with people potentially dying from them, unlike CHIKV.

but don't hold your breath waiting (another 3-5 years)...
and no quick fix, it'll be 3 doses taken over a year to be efficacious...
of course, there won't be any guarantees (and we wonder what lurking side-effects?)...
ok, don't forget a pricing policy to ensure a nice ROE for the patent (i.e. poor people need not apply)

Dengue is also called bone break fever. Besides joint pain (even the joints in your skull), the resulting dehydration can be a killer. Avoid alcohol and coffee (diuretics). Instead drink green coconut water (Filipino: buko juice) or other liquids that aid rehydration.
