A foreign girl got shot near my place in BKK last year. I was in bed at midnight when I heard a gunshot followed by a speeding moto engine. I waited a moment to ensure the ricochets could disperse safely and went out on the balcony to take a look. She was sat on the pavement on the corner of st 352 and 63. Plenty of security sods guarding various buildings on each block. A crowd gathered to peer at her whilst I considered going down to offer assistance. Too lazy to deal with all the stairs and doors and figured someone would lend her a phone. Sure enough a friend of hers arrives in an SUV. He turns into the side street but has to stop in the main road due to the crowd. A moto going the other way slams into the side of of his car at 10 miles an hour. The guy's left lying in the road clutching his mobile whilst the car driver goes to help his friend. The local cops and ambulances were busy that night.

I think that if every person who is robbed just gives up their bags without a fight (and with the understanding that thieves are rarely or never caught or punished here) it incentivizes more people to steal, or thieves to steal more.
It is sad that none of the locals bothered to help her. No ambulance was available. Eventually her backpacker friends brought her to a hospital in a Tuctuc.
Thank u. Glad to hear someone say that. If i recall, u and ur friend already survived a purse snatching a few months back. And, u beat me arm wrestling, so u are a dangerous target, lol.giblet wrote:I think that if every person who is robbed just gives up their bags without a fight (and with the understanding that thieves are rarely or never caught or punished here) it incentivizes more people to steal, or thieves to steal more.
I always say resist if POSSIBLE because i know it's not always the best choice if u weigh all ur options every time.

It is not about bothering, me thinks.. implications in the local hood, are far more complicated than one might think,..
What do you mean by that?franzjaeger wrote:It is not about bothering, me thinks.. implications in the local hood, are far more complicated than one might think,..

it's a poverty stricken country, try and think real hard about how you would run a business where gangs rule the night,.. 3-5am around here is many times associated with complete lawlessness in certain areas,

So when your poor, you don't have to bother helping an injured person?

I'd imagine most locals to leave that to professional care here, you think the few motodops around are going to be able to do anything?

How are they going to help? Even in daytime they crowd around and obstruct things, and they won't do anything useful like first aid or anything.h58494 wrote:So when your poor, you don't have to bother helping an injured person?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

It's not uncommon for an injured person on the deck to be robbed again by onlookers. She was lucky they didn't steal her shoes or any other valuables she had left.h58494 wrote:So when your poor, you don't have to bother helping an injured person?
Others would take photos to sell to the local newspapers rather than help her.
The locals still out on the street at 3am are not nice people.

How about when the next person decides to fight and ends up dead? Does that incentivize or decentivize?giblet wrote:I think that if every person who is robbed just gives up their bags without a fight (and with the understanding that thieves are rarely or never caught or punished here) it incentivizes more people to steal, or thieves to steal more.
You're crazy if you value anything you own more than your own life. If you increase the chances of a robbery escalating to violence by resisting by even a single percentage point, you're making a poor bargain in my opinion. I would not risk my life for anything other than my family.
Again, i don't think U're looking at the big picture. Where do u draw the line? "For my family" is a pretty gray area. For ur family's life? Possessions? Well being? What?Jacked Camry wrote:How about when the next person decides to fight and ends up dead? Not picking on u, but only risking ur life for ur family is pretty selfish. It's that kind of mentality that i think many robbers have. I guess I've grown up appreciating people who risk their lives (or more than that) for other people besides themselves or their own loved ones.
