and in the west how many people lined the streets to watch a jumper on a ledge? or slow down to gawk at motor accidents? human curiosity.keeping_it_riel wrote:To be honest, they'd be doing exactly the same if it was a fellow Khmer on the deck.ricecakes wrote:Typical fucking Khmer. Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

Okay, sort of agree with you, but have to play a kind of devils advocate here.ricecakes wrote: Yes....they are not picky... they'd be showing their typical lack of respect and decorum at someone elses misfortune.
If you have a society who has a population who drives motorbikes too fast while very drunk and then gets killed in an accident, why not post the pictures in the paper to scare people away from the consequences of their actions? The family is shamed due to the dead guy's stupidity, people might learn.
Alas they also pick up on events like this.
There is some kind of logic behind posting the pictures of some of the dead in the papers, and not for others.

You seem to be echoing what was said in this front page story last year:
Gawping at Death in CambodiaDermot Sheehan wrote:Pictures of dead bodies on the road are presumably justified by the fact that the sight of them might encourage more prudent behavior. Perhaps some similar “warning” logic goes into printing some of the pictures of the unfortunate foreigners who have come to their premature ends in the Kingdom. These are printed as warnings on how not to behave and what happens to those who do wrong. So shape up people, or your rotten, fly-blown remains might end up gracing the front page of the Koh Santepeap, not to mention their website.

I've got enough time tomorrow to go past the courts and police places to look at what photos they have outside. I'm not taking any pictures.

There really is very little reason to head up to the top floor at Soriya unless you are going in there to take in the excellent panoramic view looking our towards the river and the palace.BillyB wrote:Did he jump, or was he pushed?

Apart from the view, there's a fairly tawdry roller blading rink, a scruffy little cafe and that's about it unless you wander around the corner where there is a somewhat seedy looking (and I think abandoned) 'pub' or club.
Also, there are barriers up there to prevent people jumping from the building externally. However, there is nothing to stop people from jumping internally - as we found out today.

Khmers are fascinated by death. If that is bothersome, you might consider living someplace else. No reason to let cultural differences get under your skin.
It appears this guy chose to take his life in a public setting without regard for anyone else. I don't think he deserves any respect.

yeah, 'cos really most suicidal people are so outward looking and concerned about everyone around them. The amount of empathy residing in a person determines how they view a person who does something like this. Some see a selfish person, some see a person not worthy of respect, and some have compassion and empathy and see a person in pain (or having a drug-induced experience).LoneStar wrote:Khmers are fascinated by death. By the nature of a suicidal mind, a suicidal individual is fighting to keep a grip and is focussed inward. That can be thought of as selfish, but that isn't looking at the full picture.
What drives a person to do this in a public place that may harm others? Perhaps the suicidal person is making a last desperate attempt to be seen by the world. Perhaps they felt alone in their darkness, cut off from everyone around them, and that people weren't seeing their pain. It could also be that he felt anger at not being seen/heard, but the emotion behind anger is pain. So, personally, I don't see selfishness as the core element here, but desperate pain.
Sometimes, all that keeps a person from actually committing suicide is the very fact they are not selfish.... they don't want to bring pain to someone left behind. I think another word should be used in the place of selfish to describe the state of mind of a person who is in such a painful place that they choose to go against the human instinct to survive at all costs, and kill themselves. maybe such a word exists, maybe we could do with coming up with a word for it.
Maybe this guy was making a last attempt to be seen by the world he felt cut off from, or maybe he was just freaking out on drugs and thought he could fly or that he had to flee some unknown pursuer.
either way. RIP

Fascinated by death huh ? so what's it called when they gather around an argument that is none of their business, a fight, ( well ok everyone likes a street fight ) , minor traffic bingles etc.It doesn't bother me any more than I'm sure being caught behind gawking crowds of gawkers on the streets bothers you. I think it's a shit trait in anyone but here they have it in spades.

My initial thoughts are exactly like KIRs.A foreigner dressed like that,it could be one of hundreds here.

I go to the fifth floor fairly regularly. That's where the cinema is located.gavinmac wrote:There really isn't much of a reason for a foreigner to be up on the 5th floor anyway. Roller skating?
I was talking to a Khmer girl about it last night. I described the incident and mentioned his age. Despite having no more knowledge of the situation than any one of us, she immediately suspected that he was pushed by his Vietnamese girlfriend.
