An official from the Daunh Penh District Office who had participated in the examination of the body of the Israeli national stated that he had found, after staking out the Soriya Shopping Mall for consecutive days from morning to night when it closed, that security stood sentry at all times by the escalators on each floor. When queried about the foreigner’s 5 floor plunge to his death, however, security personnel had claimed to know nothing about the event. An inquiry for the security camera had also been met with a rebuff. All these factors have raised the suspicions of the public who believe that the victim had been murdered by being pushed off the landing of the 5th floor.

Dodgy!!

A young man stated that he had seen the foreigner ascending the escalator to the fifth floor, but that near the top he had reached out to grab a star decoration, which caused him to lose his balance and topple over to the ground floor below where he met his instant death.

Clearly the man was reaching for the stars. Perhaps even the star of David?

(yeah yeah yeah all very insensitive of me...)

Very.

It makes it sound like Sorya security was in on it or involved in a coverup. What's up with that?

And am I understanding the translation correctly? The cops asked for the security video and they were refused ("rebuffed")?
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

A conspiracy theory where no conspiracy exists.Would the cctv cameras actually function, probably not.
A 17year schoolie fell from a balcony on the gold coast this week.
The sixth such death there this year-any conspiracy.
Nah.

I can tell you from years of working in the casino industry that camera coverage is never as comprehensive as what the general public expects. It's also not uncommon for the coverage to get lost or deleted just through incompetence or technical glitches.

As ken svay says, the cameras there may not work. They may work but they didn't have the recorders properly hooked up. They may not have had cameras at all up on the fifth floor, or if they did, not pointing towards the railing he fell from. Or they may have cameras pointing in right direction right at the exact railing he fell from but someone has hung up a large decoration blocking the view of the camera. They may have cameras that automatically pan back and forth and back and forth that were just panning in the other direction when he fell. There are a lot of reasons why there wouldn't be coverage, mostly that only a small part of the small is under coverage from fixed cameras at any time.

What I would expect in this kind of situation is that they would have some incidental coverage of him entering with the girl and/or the girl leaving, and maybe some coverage of him falling through the sky and the subsequent commotion, but I wouldn't expect there to be video coverage of the actual leap/slip/push.

Every hotel I've stayed at has at least one CCTV camera installed, none with any wires leading from it though.

There was another jumper at Soriya ealier in the week - this time a local who'd just been dumped by his girlfriend. He phoned her to tell her what his was about to do and then took a leap from the 4th floor. Apparently someone grabbed his phone and ran off with it after he hit the deck.

Don't come to London old son. Cameras absolutely everywhere. Doesn't help a 17y/o's family stabbed to death on the top deck of a bus in rush hour though.

BB is everywhere but it's generally the Crown Prosecution Service that makes the clerical errors upon which most criminal trials are thrown out. Interestingly (you be the judge), less CCTV in the places you would expect it most: The RCJ has very limited camera coverage. Maybe they expect one to get lost in its labyrinthine rabbit warren-like corridors so deem further protection unnecessary. Has worked to date.

Foreigner falls 5 floors in Soriya Mall

I agree re CCTV--many companies have fake cameras or just cant be bothered replacing them when they break. I got mugged a couple of streets away from home in London. The 6 attackers had walked past the local stripper club which has 4 cameras outside - the club told police the cameras were fake, though they were prob just covering up their drug dealing. Amusingly it was in the same small park where the IRA had fired a rocket at the nearby MI6 building a few years earlier - you think they'd've added cameras given London's obsessive cctv reputation.

A few years ago a chap was pushed or fell from the 5th floor into the atrium at work (his family claimed he was pushed as he'd just made allegations of serious corruption against the company). Anyway, I got out of the lift just after and it took me a few seconds to realise what it was - just lots of white matter - presumably fat or brain. Dinner time.

that mall needs to put in a net.

Sad to learn of Benny's passing.

I first met him in 2005 at Romdoul's on Victory Hill and our paths crossed several times after that. He was always good company and enjoyed a long blether about the football. He knew his stuff and I'm sure I'd have converted him to being a bluenose given time. Anyone who witnessed Benny and his pal Kobi (sp?) in full flight would remember it, you'd hear the voices from Snooky to Saigon.

I still laugh when remembering meeting him in Poipet en route to Bangkok a few years back. I'd never considered stopping overnight there however Benny had a few tricks to show me when it came to "working" the casinos. Free beer, free food and a decent room in Poipet for 300B or so - the Israeli way!

Rest in peace Benny and sincere condolances to his family and friends who may be reading this.
