-Siem Reap Province: A young male Norwegian tourist was found dead in his room on the 3rd floor of the Thunborey Hotel, located in Vihear Chen Village, Svay Dongkeum Commune, Siem Reap Town – Province
-The hotel and police at several levels refused to cooperate with reporters or allow photos of the death scene.
-A police official identified the dead foreigner as ‘GULLIKSEN KRISTOFFER,’ a 22 year old Norwegian male, holding passport #28242067.
-The victim had entered Siem Reap Town on the 18th of April, 2013, arriving in Cambodia through the Poipet border crossing, and had been staying in Room 327, on the 3rd floor of the Thunborey Hotel.
-The victim was found dead at 3 pm on the 19th of April, 2013.
-Although police would not officially release information about the victim’s death, a medical examiner at the scene stated that the foreigner had overdosed on medication to treat a brain disorder and that a foreign prescription had been found on his person.
-A police official revealed off the record that police refusal to allow reporters to take photos of the body came at the request of the hotel’s owner who was fearful of negative publicity.
-Although he did not attend the scene personally, the hotel owner, identified as ធន បុរី (Ton Borey), sent forth a representative to confer with police and scurry about in an effort to hush up the incident.

It seems a lot of young foreigners come to Cambodia and suddenly overdose on medication that they presumably had no trouble taking before they arrived in Cambodia. Or they overdose on street drugs and the Khmer police blame it on their heart medication, epilepsy medication, anti-depressants, etc.
Follow my lame Twitter feed: @gavin_mac
oh well, in thailand they would close the case as "suicide".gavinmac wrote:It seems a lot of young foreigners come to Cambodia and suddenly overdose on medication that they presumably had no trouble taking before they arrived in Cambodia. let's face, most of these young stoners are already in bad shape when they cross the border of cambodia.
who knows what he smoked or injected or ingested.
why else do you think they come here if not for the cheap drugs and the relaxed laws compared to death penalty in thailand/indonesia/malaysia ?

It's obvious that the retarded cops have finally started to realize just how much more than can charge the businesses for blocking the press than they can charge the press for letting them in to snap a few pics.
No credit to the cops here.
I worked that out as well, cambod.A new income stream by threatening to allow the photographers in.

I agree with LTO. The press should follow the sterling example of the men in blue, who are paragons of virtue.LTO wrote:Good on the hotel and cops for that.

Maybe they did. Maybe not. The former wouldnt be surprizing. Either way they were right to block the press. And the press is clearly upset they didn't get their lurid death shots and are to trying smear the hotel in revenge with these whines of 'cover up.' Good on the cops for refusing them. Screw the Khmer press. It's obvious that the retarded cops have finally started to realize just how much more than can charge the businesses for blocking the press than they can charge the press for letting them in to snap a few pics.

-The Norwegian national was identified as a 22 year old male named ‘Gulliksen Kristoffer,’ who had entered Cambodia on a (tourist) visa, #220191 47529. He had arrived in Siem Reap from Poipet on the evening of the 18th of April, 2013, along with 7 travelling companions of whom 3 were female. Together, they had taken 5 rooms at the Thunborey Hotel at about 11:00 pm on the same evening.
-A police official gave out that the Norwegian was found dead at 7:30 am of the 19th of April, 2013 and his death was estimated to have occurred earlier in the morning at about 3:00 am.
-The police official added that the police investigation so far was linking the probable cause of death to: 1) the victim having brain cancer, 2) the victim having abused his prescribed medication (ការប្រើប្រាស់ថ្នាំខុស ពីវេជ្ជបញ្ជា) of which a quantity was found on his person, and 3) the victim having taken his medication when his body was in a severely weakened state.
- (An obscure passage follows in which) a bag of medication discovered in the room was claimed by a police official stationed at the scene as belonging to him.
-The body was taken to the Royal Angkor Hospital where it was being held for embassy officials.

At least this one seems to have been on the way out anyway. Still tragic, but perhaps a slight bit less so than the otherwise healthy young people that come here, do stupid things and die.Alex wrote:Jeez, yet another 22 y.o. guy dead.
brain cancer at 22 ? sounds BS to me.
can happen but it's rare.

Depending on the type of "brain cancer," some types are more common in children and young adults than older adults.betakhmer wrote:brain cancer at 22 ? sounds BS to me.

The Khmer and the Corpse

CEN takes aim and fires off some parting shots at the Thunborey Hotel owner:
-A police official involved in the investigation of the Norwegian national’s death stated that the victim had died in his room at the Thunborey Hotel on the morning of the 19th of April, 2013, but the hotel had delayed reporting his death to authorities until later in the afternoon of the same day at 3:00 pm.
-When police arrived at 3:00 pm to perform an investigation, they were met by a representative of the hotel owner who peppered them with questions to establish the legitimacy of their presence there in order to restrict police access to the hotel. Reporters as well were refused entry to the hotel and photos not allowed.
-The uncooperative attitude on the part of the hotel came as a result of the hotel owner’s desire to prevent news of the Norwegian’s death from being widely reported by the media, which bad publicity he feared would spook tourists into giving his hotel the go by.
-The belated medical examination found the corpse already swollen and a time of death no longer assignable. It determined an overdose of medication prescribed by a Norwegian doctor to treat a brain disease (ជំងឺផ្នែកខួរក្បាល) to be the cause of death.
-After the medical examination was completed, the hotel tried to delay the removal of the body from the hotel until it could be made under the cover of darkness.
-The body was taken to the morgue of the Royal Angkor International Hospital.
-Authorities stated that the dead Norwegian’s family had arranged for his insurance company to have the body transported to Phnom Penh on the 20th of April, from where it would later be flown home.
