Identity of victim: Leung Meng Lee, 21 years old, and month old wife.

Discovered hanging with nightshirt looped around neck and tied to window bar in bedroom of house in Battambang Province.

Events leading to hanging: Forced by parents into a marriage with a Cambodian from America (according to a neighbor). After he had returned to America, and just over a month following the marriage, the girl asked her parents to be allowed to continue her studies in Phnom Penh. Her parents denied the request, asking what for, she had a US husband already. But the girl insisted and the parents at last tried to put her off to the extent of allowing her to go, but not until after Pchum Ben Festival. This wasn’t good enough for the girl who went straight up to her room at 12:00 pm, 10th September, 2014, and locked the door. At 5:00 pm, 10th September, 2014, missing her daughter, the mother went up to her bedroom, found the door locked, called knocked, got no answer, had relations break the lock, entered and fainted at the sight. Speculation has it that the girl had a prior (but unsuitable to parents) lover in Phnom Penh whom she particularly wanted to meet.

Body of girl found hanging by means of a clothesline attached to a metallic roof by colleagues Friday morning, 6:20 am, the 12th September, 2014, on the 4th floor of the Sampo Meas Polyclinic , Boeung Prolit Commune.

Identity of victim: Srey Ra, 19 years old, from Prey Veng Province, who had been employed as a santation worker at the clinic for several years.

Reason for suicide unclear though colleagues stated she had been depressed over the last 3 days.

The first suicide of Leung Meng Lee sounds very much like a revenge suicide common in Chinese culture and it is possible she may have been Khmer Chinese especially with a name like Lee.

Research has shown that suicide may have a different meaning in the Chinese context, especially for women with an inferior status within the family. Suicide is taken as an act of revenge in a moral and spiritual sense. The act of suicide is very powerful; it grants the woman so much power that she may achieve what she could not during her lifetime. The suicide event remains in the collective memory of the relatives and other people who knew the person. Its powerful meaning is related to the memory of the transgressive event of taking one’s own life as well as to the collective and personal guilt connected with the event. Maybe not. A western girl would have probably "eloped" but in Chinese and similar cultures the family bond (as you will be aware) is very strong and the daughter is unlikely to go against the wishes of her parents. In her mind she either has to endure the marriage forced upon her or suicide and become a Nǚ Guǐ (女鬼) the ghost of a women who has commited suicide because she has been wronged. The family would then have to cope with this ghost, like the one below forever!

-A female drudge and a relation of the director of the Sompov Meas Polyclinic hanged herself on the 4th floor for reasons unknown, though a colleague who roomed with the victim stated that she was peeved at being overworked. For instance, she would complain at being made to wash dishes late into the night long after fellow staffers had retired for the night. The victim was identified as Kom Roam, 18 years old, from Prey Veng Province, who had been employed and stationed at the polyclinic since she was 12 years old.

-The clinic’s director was not available for comment and 2 or 3 security guards were stationed in front of the clinic preventing journalists from accessing the clinic.

-The body of the girl was discovered at 6:00 am, 12th September, 2014, when a hospital staff member went up to the 4th floor to collect medical garb and mattress covers being hung to dry there. After the discovery was made, the clinic’s manager immediately reported it to the authorities, and an ad hoc committee was formed to perform an examination of the body before it was handed over to relatives for the traditional funeral.

-A source who observed the proceedings broached another possibility for the girl’s suicide. The girl’s belly was swollen as if in an advanced stage of pregnancy. The source theorized that the girl might have been involved in a sexual relationship which resulted in her becoming pregnant, that the relationship somehow got broken, and thus the decision to kill herself. The source stated that being overworked could not of itself be an impetus for her suicide, but that there had to be some other unknown reason that finally pushed her over the edge.
