Anti-trafficking police raid GADO pizza and wine bar on St.1
He did, until jm posted the information about the guy's drug dealing past in Italy.
And to add, he wasn't one of my "best mates", my wife and I have just known him for a couple years from the he first came to Cambodia until now. I'll still vouch that he was a really nice guy, but beyond that, seems I don't know much of the story.

I occasionally stopped into GADO for wine and pizza. Jeffrey aka Marco did seem like a nice guy. I did find it funny that his supposed Italian wife had a Slavic sounding accent and a rather large scar from mouth to ear. One other detail that doesn't add up is the Jamaican girl who worked there. Jeffrey was having a tough time getting her a transit visa through the USA, so that she could travel from Jamaica to Cambodia. If she was Nigerian, why would she have needed a transit visa to fly from Kingston through the U.S.? According to both of them, she was his cousin. Anyone know or suspect anything?

A moldovan woman accused of keeping an employee in debt bondage and forcing her to have sex with customers yesterday maintained her innocence, claiming the alleged victim had “begged” to come to Cambodia.
Liudmila Bejenari, 28, known as “Linda”, was arrested in June 2015 after anti-trafficking police raided the Ga-Do Italian Pizza and Wine Shop in Phnom Penh. She now faces up to 20 years in prison.
The victim – who is known only by her first name, Christina, and is also from Moldova – was 19 at the time of the raid.
According to the complaint, filed by Christina and read in court, Linda met Christina in Moldova and “lured” her to Cambodia with the promise of work. Linda then allegedly confiscated Christina’s passport, did not pay her a salary and forced her to have sex with customers for money.
Linda, who stands charged of “unlawful removal” under Article 10 of the Anti-Trafficking Law, yesterday denied that account.
“I did not invite her to work in Cambodia, she asked me to come and work here,” she said. “Because she did not have money, we made an agreement and I loaned money to her to get a passport, visa and flight ticket. She signed the contract willingly.”
The agreement stipulated that Christina must repay the money within one year.
“But she hasn’t done so and she filed a complaint against me,” Linda said.
Phnom Penh police made the arrest after a request from Moldovan police, who were alerted to the situation by Christina’s parents. Christina is now seeking $20,000 in compensation.
However, four witnesses – two staff members and two owners of the restaurant building – appeared to corroborate Linda’s account, according to written statements read before the Phnom Penh court.
They said Christina was very close to Linda and that Christina was able to “walk freely” to deliver pizza and wine to customers. Their statements made no mention of forced sex.
The trial faced repeated delays over the last two years, due to lack or absence of lawyers and translators.
After two hours of questioning at her long-awaited trial yesterday, Linda’s two defence lawyers requested the court drop the charges.

I dont think she had a choice. She was in prison, awaiting trial.
I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.

Unrelated to trafficking, but somewhat similar to this point. Last year in Koh Rong Samloen I noticed a lot of Ukrainians (men and women), and asked why. One or two of the guest houses/bars are owned by a Ukrainian, and they put an ad in a local paper in the Ukraine, and the people thought "well I could stay in a country at war or fly to Cambodia and work on a beach." I think it was an easy choice for them. I doubt they made/make much if any money, but they speak the same language and have the same culture as the owner, so they might be deemed as more trustworthy or capable to the owner.gavinmac wrote:Why would anyone traffic an Eastern European woman all the way to Cambodia just to work in a restaurant when local labor is available for near-slavery low wages? It doesn't make a lot of sense unless there's some drug trafficking or prostitution going on.
