Haha "vigorously rubbing tiger balm" is the exact phrase I used in the article.

From Facebook comments it sounds like the Irishman was known around town and believed to be homeless.

Irish guy has been doing eat & runs for a while now. Eating and running before the bill arrives.
Someone who he did a runner on saw him with a swollen and fucked leg and gave chase. Irish lad thought it was a collector and tried to limp promptly away but was caught. He did owe money but collector instead told him to get his fucked up leg checked and forget about the bill for now. Lad said he won't go to hospital as he just did a runner from the hospital.
2 days later he is dead in Ethiopian place.

The report doesn't even say he was eating in the restaurant. He just sat down and ordered a glass of water and drank it. How do Street 172 restaurants make any money? I wonder if they had to pay off the coppers. Is the place own by real life Ethiopians?

Jacked up in the toilet.
Came out, died.
Didn't drink the tea.

I don't know what "jacked up in the toilet" means. Rama's translation says he asked for a glass of water, sat down and drank it and died.

It does say tea, sorry. It was a rushed translation, think the use of the word glass rather than cup made me associate with water. It could have been iced tea I suppose.
Nokorwat, Rasmei and Kampuchea Thmey all report he walked straight into the restaurant, ordered a glass of tea, sat down and drank the whole glass, then suddenly collapsed, whereupon tiger balm first aid was administered and he died. All reports (and witness testimony in them) recount he entered, ordered, drank, collapsed, then died. None of the three reports I've read say he went to the toilet, or more importantly for the establishment, did he eat any food.

I was told he fell down in front before making it in to order anything.gavinmac wrote:The report doesn't even say he was eating in the restaurant. The joint is run by Ethiopians. Feel bad for the dead bloke, but feel worse for the Ethiopian guys who are 3 months into their lease. Can't imagine it's easy being black here. Dead white guys won't help things. Is it the same polive/mortuary fee for restaurants as it is for St 172 guesthouses?

I feel sorry for them too, but it obviously wasn't their fault.
I'm looking forward to eating there as soon as I can get around to it.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't. Not without your help. But you're not helping.
His friends, who will remember him as an intelligent, peaceful, ,generous, open-minded, engaging, personable and sick man, were no more able to help him than he was himself.
Phnom Penh will be a tidier, though duller, place without his shambling personality. It is a pity that he was not able to be all he could, but, then again, who does?
What a waste of resources.....

Ignis Gratis.
Right. Well.
Odd thread for a positive review I spose but this place is excellent. Couldn't identify many of the flavours, which made it all the better.
Thoroughly nice bunch running it. We embarrassed ourselves slightly by exclaiming we were 'starving' and then thought mildly hungry might be more appropriate in an Ethiopian restaurant.
Luckily they have beer so didn't try the lethal Rif water.
Thumbs up to 'em.
