Sambor Prei Kuk temples given World Heritage site status
Sambor Prei Kuk temples given World Heritage site status
UNESCO has named the fifty or so temples at Sambor Prei Kuk as Cambodia's third World Heritage Site. To be honest, i can't say I've ever heard of them, but the articles say it was once the capital of the Chenla Empire.
Sambor Prei Kuk—a collective of about 50 pre-Angkorian temples in Kompong Thom province—was approved on Saturday as Cambodia’s third World Heritage site, making way for increased conservation and its promotion as a remote tourist attraction.
The 7th-century temples, which display unique archaeological traits from the short-lived Chenla era, are scattered across more than 2,000 hectares of forest and include a walled-in city center. They join Angkor Archaeological Park and the Preah Vihear temple as World Heritage Convention sites.

I've driven past them quite a few times. Considering the view from the road I'm not sure they are worth a diversion just to see them. Admittedly I didn't realise the site was so big.
Even though I've been past them 3 or 4 times as yet I haven't stopped to have a look. Maybe I will sometime. Maybe not.
It is a lot lower key than Angkor Wat and there are hardly any visitors - at least not when I went past.

Morticia is from this area and we have stopped in before. Many of these little temples look the same on the outside, but the inside of each is fairly different. She and her family as kids used to play around them but did not go in, as it was dark and scary inside.
I have been meaning to spend a day out there and explore more closely. I want to study the iconography found within...

I've been thinking of checking that place out. I'd go just to see this tree:
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I've been there twice. It was nice because literally no one used to go there and it also has some more unusual structures, such as one of relatively few Khmer pyramid temples (almost mesoamerican in style). A lot of the temples are smaller in size though. The first time I went they were starting to upgrade the ring road into proper laterite, and I think by now it's likely paved. It made accessing the temples quite easy and made for a pleasant drive. Pretty sure they get big groups now as the second time I went the people at the gate told me the number of tours had quintupled or something since they'd upgraded the road. Still far enough that most don't go though.

Not paved yet. UNESCO wouldn't allow it. Beautiful site. The outlying area was heavily bombed and impact craters can be seen from the road on the approach.

It probably would have scared me as a kid too. I would have gone in if I had a hand to hold, but if they pulled their hand away while I was in there, I'd have probably screamed (like a girl ... I do good girl screams - spiders can tell you that). Now, I'd be nervous of Playboy lurking somewhere and shutting me in there!Felgerkarb wrote:Morticia is from this area and we have stopped in before. LexusSchmexus I think you are talking about Ko Ker not Sambor Prei Kuk.
Lots of bomb craters all around Kompong Thom.Maybe more than any other other place in Cambodia.Could be the fact Pol Pot was born about eight K downstream from Kompong Thom on the Stung Sen.

Oops yeah, sorry. I've also been to Prey Kuk a bunch of times though. Very nice villages in the surrounding area. First time I went the main road off the old Kompong Thom preach Vihear road wasn't really a road, but they had planted a bunch of cashew plantations. No one sold tickets. I think last time I went they had a shack, but the grounds are so big that it's easy to accidently (or intentionally, cough cough) end up at the temples from the Northor East. I was actually there most recently earlier this year, but didn't take the main approach and only stopped at two temples or so. I'll see if I can dig up a few pictures later on. Still, both Prey Kuk and Preah Kanh in Preah Vihear both now have large access roads for the tour busses.

Certainly the road from the preah vihear road to the entrance of the temple complex is paved and has been for at least three years. Maybe you are speaking about the road inside the complex?BigBilliard400 wrote:Not paved yet. UNESCO wouldn't allow it. Beautiful site. The last time I was up (last year) the road approaching the site was a good road but closer to the site it changed to a red dirt road albeit good quality
