The strong man possibly taking advantage of the Imbecile & Chief situation, China won't give a monkeys and that's who Cambodia really bow to.Felgerkarb wrote:Americans blamed too. Tit for tat begins...
All the Khmers I've spoken to today couldn't give a monkeys either; they're all firmly of the opinion that CNRP is simply a CPP creation/play thing anyway, a circus merely being played out for the world. Finding it hard to disagree.
Same Same, but Same.

So he was advised by liberal Professors during the Obama administration...lolRama wrote:The evidence put forward so far supporting Kem Sokha's "conspiracy with foreigners to overthrow the RGC" is a speech Kem Sokha gave in Australia and broadcast by an Australian based opposition news network.
It's given as evidence here:
His speech, with subtitle translation starts at about the halfway point, just after a sound clip of 'Imagine' by John Lennon.
I cant see any serious backing from the USA now, under Trump.
Nobody cares when they force out Rainsy or arrest Sokha. Where are the angry mobs with smartphones and Facebook that the political analysts are sure will overthrow the government?
HE has not made a statement about the arrest but HM did on Twitter. Interesting.
It will also be interesting to see if the reported 100-200 cops raid the Cambodia Daily tonight. They're due to be shut down after midnight. The closure needs to happen late night to prevent tomorrow's publication. Wonder if this was practice.
Fuck, it would be great to hear LTO's take on all of this.
Bless

HE just has made a statement - and of course its "the third hand"...mmmhummm

11a.m.: Prime Minister Hun Sen has justified the arrest of opposition leader Kem Sokha, saying it was necessary to counter a “national conspiracy” and proved there was the influence of a “third hand” – an oft-used reference to foreign interference – in Cambodia.
The premier was speaking to garment workers at Koh Pich in Phnom Penh, when he said Sokha’s arrest was necessitated by the “seriousness” of the case and that authorities had finally found the “third hand”, although he did not refer to Sokha by name.
“We have been searching for a third hand, who is that? And now we finally found the third hand,” he said.
The arrest followed the circulation of a 2014 video clip on social media, originally published by Cambodian Broadcasting Network in Australia, in which he purportedly admits to getting assistance from the United States to effect a regime change in Cambodia.
“I want you all to broadcast on all the TVs. [The] seriousness is very big and this issue is an act of the national conspiracy,” he said.
The prime minister’s comment seemed to echo his son’s, Hun Manith, who took to Facebook just after the arrest to decry the opposition leader as a traitor.
“Kem Sokha betrayed Cambodia. He confessed to have long term plans with the United States of America… Thank to him, we now know who [is] the Third Hand.”...

Young Khmer don't talk about politics as freely as a westerner or even other Asians. Even among Uni or school friends.
They just think it's inevitable that CPP will win and would rather not vote for anyone. They're to worried if they vote for anyone else.

pew, pew, pew, pew!
In the video Sokha compares HE to Milosevic and says: "I did not do anything of free will", implying that he has been acting on American orders, or "advice" as he calls it, since 1993.
What exactly did he think would happen when he said that?

I would agree that most Khmer dont talk about politics openly for sure but with the huge gains that were made in the last election by the opposition its pretty clear that there are a lot of people unhappy with status quo and people are voting and many of the votes went to the opposition.YaTingPom wrote:Young Khmer don't talk about politics as freely as a westerner or even other Asians. Cambodia has voter turnouts that many western democratic countries could only dream of. 86% voter turn out tells me that they are voting.
The big question is how will the recent moves by the cpp be perceived by the public?
Crushing all dissent, silencing critics and scare mongering obviously isn't working as well as it has in the past.
If the CNRP is dissolved, which may very well happen if Sokha is found guilty, then it's pretty much game over. Remember why Kem Sokha was recently made leader.kansaicanuck wrote:The big question is how will the recent moves by the cpp be perceived by the public?

While the people who want change may no longer have a viable option for the next election if that happens, it still doesn't change the fact that millions of people support them and I suspect that many people are not just going to throw their hands in the air and say "oh well". Crushing the only viable opposition party is probably going to create a lot more problems than is solves in the end.
At any rate, my pessimism with the state of Cambodia grows and I dont think this is looking good at all.

My take on the situation:
Video - opposition MP voices intention to depose government and take charge. Admits to taking advice from outside parties.
This is 4 years old, I wonder how long they have been sitting on this waiting for something better.
I guess nothing better came along as he had learned from other Facebook rows (Sam Rainsy) and was more cautious what he was saying in public forums.
No fan of the guy - but treason? Give me a break, what do they think in the point/intention of opposition parties? Aren't they allowed to say they wish to take power?
What is it with these people though? Give them a microphone and they lose all sensibilities and say whatever comes to mind. Happens at all levels.
Is Mu Sochea still around? Haven't heard much of her since her husband sadly passed away. I've always thought she was fairly sensible - but have doubts whether Cambodia is ready for a female leader
