The rubbish of the 166 families who dropped threw it into a Steung Mean Chey river outlet was shocking because it was more than 2 meters deep.
The discovery of the rubbish depth came after Phnom Penh authorities checked the canal on the afternoon of January 4, 2018, ahead of the launch of the four sewage drainage sewer in Phnom Penh in the near future.
After some 166 families voluntarily demolished their homes so authorities can begin to construct a new concrete canal sluice 'Sleng 371 Canal Aquaduct, authorities went down to check out garbage in the bottom of the canal and found it had a thickness from 2.5 meters to 3.5 meters, which is one cause of congestion and why drainage systems fail to prevent flooding in some areas.
The new Canal Project will address floodwaters in the area of Tek Thla, in the south and east of the airport.
It is highlighted that some of these rehabilitation campaigns, the Royal Government, especially Phnom Penh Capital Hall, have taken specific steps to find a suitable solution for the people, as well as top dispel the water from further flooding.
However, people who live along the canal as well as the general population have been asked to participate in the maintenance of the canal drainage system by not throwing garbage into it.
For those who volunteered to relocate, the authorities are also planning to divide the development plots in the area of the people from the canal.

It's interesting how all the recent relocations have involved relatively fair negotiations. In this scenario I imagine they are putting concrete banks on the canal, then slabs across, like they have done in Boeung Trabek and at the market on 310 and other places.
It's a good idea, how it will pan out I don't know. The area reclaimed will be vast and I can't imagine they'll hand over a whole lot of it to the locals. For now you can see they have set up a load of metal huts under the Stung Meanchey overpass and this is where the families will be living for the time being. I noticed some have moved in already. For those who volunteered to relocate, the authorities are also planning to divide the development plots in the area of the people from the canal.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
It can hardly be called a drainage system yet but this is progress.
Where does the shit river start? Anybody know? Do we need a Livingstone, Burton or Stanley to find it for us?

I wondered what those huts were, I assumed it was for construction workers.Lucky Lucan wrote:It's interesting how all the recent relocations have involved relatively fair negotiations. Funnily when this overpass was opened HE ordered a garden to be made and no one was to live under it.

There are a few. The Stung Meanchey one goes underground at st 230 under a police facility, a bit west of Mondial Center. The eastern one that flows along 105 through Boeung Trabek disappears underground at Monivong just south of Sihanouk now, I think it originally went along were Monivong is now to O'Russei ( Bamboo stream). There's a middle one that started from the lakes around the stadium, it's underground till it gets south of Wat Moha Montrie now, and then gets covered again south of 310. Back in the 1960s there were meadows and a stream in that area.maven wrote:Where does the shit river start? Anybody know? Do we need a Livingstone, Burton or Stanley to find it for us?
local chap wrote: The area behind Wat Moha Montrey crossed by that black sewer was a large swathe of grassy land where kids used to fly kites early in the year.

There's also a shit river in Tuol Sangke, flowing down to Tuol Kork. The houses that were on the both parts of it (near the market) have been destroyed recently and now the concrete canal is completed. Not sure if they drained it at all and cleaned it because the water's color is ranging from dark grey to black.
