Phnom Penh (FN), April 24 - Try Pheap Group and Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Port Group, on Tuesday, signed agreement on cooperation for the development of port that can accommodate vessels weighted from 10,000 to 30,000 tonnes to dock.
The signing ceremony was presided over by Men Sam An, Minister of National Assembly–Senate Relations and Inspection, attended by tourism and environment ministers and Chinese ambassador to Cambodia.
Oknha Try Pheap said the construction of the new port will provide 500 jobs at the start of the construction and increase to 1,500 over the next three years.
Prime Minister Hun Sen believed that the port will be a new corridor under One Road One Belt Initiative, as the National Road 3 will be expanded with the presence of hydropower station.

Imagine if you had a business in SHV and your landlord kicked you out, as has happened to alot of folks here.
So you make you way to Kampot or Ko Kong and set up a business there and start a fresh.....
Oh fuck!
The most amazing thing to me is the pace of the takeover. It's almost like a panic rather than greed. What's the rush? Is it a rush into the safe haven USD?

The shophouses in Kampot are not French colonial but Chinese. I spent two nights in Kratie and it was lovely and quiet, the river banks on the island on the far side have huge expanses of sand. And it's close to Lao where Vang Vieng is cranking again according to backpackers.
But to live there?

That's a very good point. I often see pictures of what were originally rich Chinese merchant's houses that are labeled "colonial (implying French) house. There are many beautiful French period buildings around Cambodia but I don't know of any shophouses they ever built! Besides that, the coast has a colored history and there were many times when Kampot pre-French intervention was completely outside any royal government control, Chinese and Vietnamese groups had taken over the whole coast, Cambodia was for a while landlocked.crazyjohn wrote:The shophouses in Kampot are not French colonial but Chinese. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

According to Li Min, who is investing in a project on Victory Beach, Sihanoukville, the town will become the largest seaport and the second largest city in Cambodia after Phnom Penh, and the construction of new buildings will continue in response to rising Chinese investment and tourism.
"Many of the international direct ventures in this city are changing the look through development into an international city with beautiful beaches, 5 star hotels, shopping centers, top entertainment areas and high end restaurants.
At the same time, under the close cooperation between Cambodia and China, the Chinese side has identified four coastal provinces in it’s maritime strategy: Koh Kong, Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep Provinces and a coastal corridor road from Koh Kong to Kep Province will begin construction.
Massive stalker
I don’t think kampot will be the same as SHV. No casinos allowed, no beach, no airport, no big highway planned etc.
Prices have increased only because of speculation and the few remaining expats leaving SHV.
You’ll never see the craziness of SHV anywhere in SE Asia again.
Interesting about the Chinese shophouses. I did hear that but was assured they were French colonial, which is often quoted. Are there any resources as Wiki says the later?

With Sihanoukville land prices skyrocketing it makes sense to build housing in Kampot for casino workers and others to live. I think that there is going to be an increase of Chinese influence in Kampot, casino or not, and albeit the Chinese influence will probably not be of Sihanoukville magnitude, it should be enough to evict the hippie that calls Kampot its home.
I think Battambang will be the final barang fort.
I think Battambang will be the final barang fort.
You may be right but along with the hippies some struggling expats will also be forced out. Again.
I see today a one bed (studio/bedsit) is going for $300. That’s SHV prices.
Our whole complex has been advised to look for alternative accommodation. It’s owned by an expat with a well known business in town, who’s also being evicted from that premises. He’s going to rent/sell to Chinese/Khmer. Can’t blame him really and it was inevitable.

China : If you come any closer, I will rip you to shreds.
Barang : Who are you?
China : I am China. And you, whoever you are, can have the honor of being my last victim.
Barang : I will not die easily. I am a warrior!
China : Ha! Brave warrior, then fight the Nothing.
Barang : But I can't! I can't get beyond the boundaries of Sihanoukville!
[China laughs and Barang gets a little angry]
Barang : What's so funny about that?
China : Sihanoukville has no boundaries.
[laughs]
Barang : That's not true! You're lying.
China : Foolish boy. Don't you know anything about Sihanoukville? It's the world of human fantasy. Every part, every creature of it, is a piece of the dreams and hopes of mankind. Therefore, it has no boundaries.
Barang : But why is Sihanoukville dying, then?
China : Because people have begun to lose their hopes and forget their dreams. So the Nothing grows stronger.
Barang : What is the Nothing?
China : It's the emptiness that's left. It's like a despair, destroying this world. And I have been trying to help it.
Barang : But why?
China : Because people who have no hopes are easy to control; and whoever has the control... has the power!
Barang : Who are you, really?
China : I am the servant of the power behind the Nothing. I was sent to kill the only one who could have stopped the Nothing. I lost him in the Swamps of Sadness. His name... was Barang.
Barang : [the ground shakes again and Barang is knocked down. He grabs a knife shaped piece of broken stone and stands up, ready to fight] If we're about to die anyway, I'd rather die fighting! Come for me, China! *I* am Barang!

I told my mum that I wanted to marry her but she said what about Vanessa Paradis, Erika Eleniak (ET) and Kylie Minouge! I couldn't choose so played on my Atari instead.

It was the Northrop F-5 models that were in use here during the conflict, they are stil part of the Vietnam People's Air Force, and rumor has it they want to put them back in the air again, beats me.
"Being smaller and simpler than contemporaries such as the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, the F-5 cost less to both procure and operate, making it a popular export aircraft."
