* Disturbing clip shows dogs being boiled and barbecued in Siem Reap, Cambodia
* Dogs howl and bark as they watch their friends being stirred around in cauldron
* It's still legal to slaughter dogs and sell their meat in the Southeast Asian nation
Distressing footage shows captive dogs howling as they watch fellow canines being butchered, boiled and barbecued for a wedding in Cambodia.
In the disturbing video, the animals are seen caged up at a slaughterhouse in Siem Reap with dead dogs left just metres away from them ready to be cooked.
The live dogs howl and bark as they're forced to watch their fellow animals being stirred around and boiled in a large cauldron
In another clip, a dog is seen being barbecued on an open flame while a man shaves off its hair with a knife.
Sound of Animals CEO Michael Chour, 48, who filmed the footage, said: 'These dogs were in a slaughterhouse, so death was their fate had they not been rescued.
The dogs are now ready to be adopted from our shelter in Thailand. One of them turned out to be pregnant and gave birth to five puppies.
'It was a bittersweet feeling rescuing these dogs but having to leave the rest. But it's our priority to bridge the gap between us and the butchers.'
'The barbecue video was from inside a village in Osmach, where a family was barbecuing a dog carcass for a wedding.
'This is very common in Cambodia, but that doesn't make it any easier to see.
'For me, dogs are like children, it's very hard to accept.'
Mr Chour, originally from Paris but now based in Thailand, relocated to Asia to join the fight against the dog meat trade in 2005.
While the industry has drawn global attention in China, it is lesser known in Cambodia - despite it still being legal to slaughter dogs and sell their meat in the country.
Mr Chour said his goal is to shut the trade down - but for now he must tread carefully and accept it is a deeply rooted tradition.
The 48-year-old said: 'Our method is to negotiate our way in and out the slaughterhouse in a way that will allow us to return.'
'We try not to judge a culture that is part of their upbringing.
'Many of the butchers are third generation in this trade, and don't know any different.
'For this reason, we refrain from judgment.'

Daily Mail: Dogs Slaughtered for Cambodian Wedding
Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
I am an omnivore. I eat plants and animals. A dog is an animal. I eat dog. Treating an animal like a human child is delusionary.

This is a sensational Daily Mail click bait article.
I've been to one or two weddings here, and have certainly never seen dog meat at one, and although it does clearly exist here, it isn't "very common".
I also doubt many butchers are third generation dog meat butchers -- I don't think that anybody here is third generation anything other than rice farmer or soldier.

I saw a FB post about some charity who rescued seven dogs from “a slaughter house” and they wanted cash and possible homes in the USA, as they were shipping them over.
In the USA 6 million dogs and cats are put into animal shelters each year and they euthanasia 3 million dogs and cats.
Mind boggles.

I've been to about 20 weddings here, the idea of eating dog at one is preposterous. Then again, this was in O'Smach in Oddar Meanchey, fuck knows what they get up to there.Miguelito wrote:This is a sensational Daily Mail click bait article.

Yeah, except children tend not to savagely bite you and give you rabies.'For me, dogs are like children, it's very hard to accept.'

I have a hate-love relationships in Cambodia. I had to read about it constantly on the social media sometime it drives me to hate dog-lovers. There some who overly loved dogs and cats would pay to buy them off thieves. And what happened next? Put them in overcrowded animal 'shelters' and the cycle continues. And the foreigners who find cats and dogs are cute, take them in and dump to a Khmer neighbor a few months later.
And I have been to numerous city and countryside weddings. Where about in Cambodia they serve dogs on a wedding menu?

Cambodians tell me that there are many dog restaurants out near the airport.

They are all through the city. I’m not aware of a dog restaurant area near the airport, but I have seen many dogs on a spit dotted throughout the city.crazyjohn wrote:Cambodians tell me that there are many dog restaurants out near the airport.
Look for a sign saying ‘special meat’ សាច់ពិសេស - that’s often what they call it.
I'm an omnivore too, but I don't eat carnivorous animals. Agree, humanising animals is ridiculous; in fact, it's animal abuse.CircleK wrote:I am an omnivore. I eat plants and animals. A dog is an animal. I eat dog. Treating an animal like a human child is delusionary.

This. Though I haven't spent more than two weeks or so in PP over the last couple of years, back when I did live nearby, I saw it often enough. I remember a place around Sen Sok that sold "special meat" and used a guard dog style sign of a german shepherd to advertise . I guess that would be about 3 or 4 years ago now.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:They are all through the city. I also used to see it very often around Ta Khmau. For awhile, the place next door to a common breakfast spot for me would have one on the spitroast ready to go most days.
I've been to a fair amount of ... provincial... weddings, despite avoiding them and all weddings like the plague, and wouldn't be greatly surprised if dog meat showed up at some point in the evening at one. Particularly the evening before the wedding. Many kinds of rare or endangered animals often do, to most folks delight.
I think dog meat is a lot more common in Cambodia than the BKK1 / TTP / TK expat crowd seems to realize. Obviously it's more hidden in the areas that western foreigners are likely to be. I do wonder how many tourists and expats have eaten "special meat" without realizing it. I wouldn't be slightly surprised if I have inadvertently eaten it at some point.

Inevitable that that comment would come along sooner or later. Few people keep cows or pigs as pets.... And like kinard I do not eat carnivores.

Anybody that slaughters a pooch that was just wagging his tail at the him 5 minutes before, probably lacks empathy and is likely abit of a sociopath.
I wonder what cat meat tastes like though?
