Cambodia's Mekong Dolphin Numbers On The Up
Kratie: Rin Nareoun, managing director of the Global Fund for Natural Resource Development in the Greater Mekong Landscape, said from 2015 to the end of 2017, dolphins have increased from 80 to 92, equivalent to a 15% increase.
He said that for 2017 there were 9 new born dolphins, with 2 dying. So far in 2018, they have seen 6 more offspring and three deaths.
Although the presence of dolphins has increased, Phay Semony, deputy director of the Fisheries Administration's Fisheries Department, is still concerned about fishing practices, which are threatening to the wildlife and still persisting; using a number of illegal fishing tools, such as explosives, electricity and other devices forbidden by law.
There have been training courses on patrol techniques and skills necessary to be used by law enforcement to guard the river in Kratie and Stung Treng. The authorities are committed to catching perpetrators of all forms of illegal fishing practices and will continue to conserve fishery resources and sustainable amenities on the Mekong.
