Rainsy is claiming Hun Manet didn’t graduate from West Point, which is just a silly thing to say. Manet replied in a bet his father would be (and is) proud of:
“If the US Military Academy, West Point provides certificate in two categories, like what Sam Rainsy has said… I will resign from all positions with the armed forces units and will become a civilian forever.” Lt Gen Manet said.
“But if Sam Rainsy can’t prove that West Point has two different values of degree… I wish Sam Rainsy to leave from politics forever.” He added.

Sam Rainsy makes bizarre claim and Hun Manet replies
What a twit.
Young Cambodians have no respect for Rainsy now.

Interesting article in the Khmer Times titled "US Embassy debunks Rainsy's West Point claim"
https://www.khmertimeskh.com/50647450/u ... int-claim/
They quote a spokeswoman from the US Embassy:
“Graduates of US colleges, universities or [other] institutes of higher learning receive degrees or certifications if they meet the requirements of that institution,” Ms Zeeberg said. “A student’s country of origin is not a factor.”
“We welcome Cambodian students’ interest in studying abroad in the United States,” she added. “US higher education institutions have an unmatched reputation for academic quality and critical thinking, and provide excellent English language preparation for future careers.”
Why do I get the feeling that the Khmer Times did not ask the US Embassy about Hun Manet's degree from West Point, and instead contacted the embassy to ask benign questions about Cambodian students studying in the USA and then used the answer for is article titled "US Embassy debunks Rainsy's West Point claim"?

Maybe he didn't make the grade and failed his degree? Quite a common occurrence. Anyhow, why are US education institutes attempting to educate tinpot dictators kids?

As he says above, this would be a case of ‘soft power’ - educate and push an American mindset into future leaders, while building lasting relationships that could pay off in the future.kungfufighter wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 6:05 amAnyhow, why are US education institutes attempting to educate tinpot dictators kids?

As far as I can work out the young man is highly regarded and I can only suppose that his West Point education has contributed to the way he is. His old fella never got the chance to get higher education as he was too busy with the wars. I'm sort of surprised to think how a commander of an insurgent army that was targeted by U.S. forces would send their child to study with them, but it shows a lot of respect for the former enemy. Bridge building.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Know your enemy, more like. Also, lots of tips and tricks to be learnt. West Point is focused on democracy as much as on military strategy, I thought. I hope he remembers that.

Well, the Post got to the bottom of this, and issue should be settled:
“Lieutenant General Hun Manet, the commander of the Royal Cambodian Army, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in May 1999.
“He received a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Economics,” Christopher Ophardt, the director of Public Affairs and Communications at West Point, said on Friday.
Ophardt said that according to the publicly available 2015 Register of Graduates and Former Cadets, three Cambodians have graduated from West Point – Manet in 1999, Sithyka Meach in 2011 and Sovisal Jerry Meach in 2014, all with Bachelor of Science degrees.
[sic]
Sithyka Meach, one of the two other Cambodians to graduate from West Point along with her brother Sovisal Jerry Meach, said on Facebook last week that the military academy did not issue honorary or “second-class” degrees as Rainsy had claimed.
“My brother and I had made huge efforts for four years to meet the requirements and get a degree with the same value as the other cadets.
“[Rainsy] looks down on Cambodians when [he] says we cannot graduate to the same level and can only get degrees of a lesser standard to people of other nationalities.
“It is truly offensive to hear those words, and even more offensive to think that they were being used to validate his policies. He should focus on social issues instead of spreading lies. Shame!” she said.
Sam should just throw in the towel. waste of time, Hun Sen will floor him in the 1st round.

"all with Bachelor of Science degrees"
West Point don't issue anything other than BSc's.
I wonder what his American Politics dissertation was on.
