A train crashed into a passenger bus in northwestern Cambodia's Pursat province on Friday, leaving 45 people hospitalized, a local police chief said.
The accident happened at around 11:00 a.m. local time at a railway crossing in Krakor district when the bus was crossing the train line, Pursat provincial police chief Sar Theng said.

I hope there is an investigation as to whether the train driver was speeding, drunk or not wearing his glasses.

That is horrible I’m guessing the 45 that were injured were all on the bus?

Agreed, horrible. What is even more horrible is that the bus driver managed to get hit by a train doing about 30 kilometers an hour. Pure fcuktardery!Chroy Changvarite wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2024 5:59 amThat is horrible I’m guessing the 45 that were injured were all on the bus?

Train driver broke his leg
The train tracks in Krakor are in a relatively remote area far from the main road. Bus drivers there are most often the largest moving vehicles and thus more likely to drive as if entitled. I'd guess this is the sad result of such an attitude. That, the infrequency of trains, and likely an uncontrolled crossing.
(That said, if the Chinese are actually thinking of doing a new 'Build-Operate-Transfer' expressway to Poipet via Siem Reap, I hope they decide to do a fast express passenger train line instead. Be nice, say in 25 years, to have fast train routes from Phnom Penh to: BKK, Singapore, Lao, or Calcutta!)

There's a video of it from behind the bus on the road and the train does quite a big jump so it's possible some of the injured were on the train.Chroy Changvarite wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2024 5:59 amThat is horrible I’m guessing the 45 that were injured were all on the bus?
It's fucking ridiculous this shit keeps happening. Crawling train, bus on fixed route.

Forty-five people were injured, five of them critically, when a train crashed into the side of a bus at a rail crossing in northwestern Cambodia Friday, police said.
Gen. Sar Theng, the police chief for Pursat province, said the crash in Krakor district occurred around 11 a.m. when the bus attempted to cross the tracks even though the oncoming train had loudly sounded its horn as it approached.
The train hit the middle of the bus, pushing it several meters, he said.
The bus driver fled, leaving behind the injured passengers, who were aided by police and villagers and taken to hospitals for treatment, he added.
Sar Theng said there used to be a barrier at the crossing but it had broken and had not yet been replaced.
He said there is a large sign posted on the road warning that there is a railroad crossing ahead and urging drivers to proceed slowly.
It is not unusual for rail crossings in Cambodia to lack safety barriers.
Sar Theng said all the bus passengers were Cambodians who had reportedly hired the vehicle for a visit to a mountain nature resort.
“The incident would not have happened if the driver was driving responsibly,” he said, noting that when the train is approaching populated areas and road junctions, its engineer will sound his horn to alert people to stay away from the tracks.
The accident was the fault of the driver for ignoring the horn, he said.
According to reports from Cambodia’s national police and Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, nearly 1,600 people died in road accidents last year.

Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
If the rail crossing barriers are broken, how is it that the rail company does not have somebody there to warn traffic until it was mended? Manual/low skill labour is very cheap still in the KoW.
Sorry but this railway is a national embarrassment & the government really needs to take them to task to clean up their safety record, fund it properly, or ship out. Nation is begging for a proper train route from Bangkok/Siem Reap/Phnom Penh/Ho Chi Minh, high speed Chinese style with Chinese money, not this pre-Victorian tinpot nonsense.

Would anyone really take the train though, what with the abundance of cheap flights? Vietnam has been mulling a high-speed link between HCMC and Hanoi for decades, but spending billions on it just doesn't make sense. Unless you go the French way and ban short domestic flights.Spigzy wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:28 amIf the rail crossing barriers are broken, how is it that the rail company does not have somebody there to warn traffic until it was mended? I reckon there has to be a set of backpacker types or others who might only want to do SE Asia once; so they can hit all three countries in one trip, especially without any real long haul direct flights to Cambodia, we're losing a share of tourism that might just fancy a trip across one border at least, if not both. Especially for folks who don't want to go through the airport shake down & queues, the flights are short, but spending 3 hours a pop in Bangkok waiting/walking, is horrible- at least you can shop there mind, HCMC has sod all!
Put some freight on there and a proper route PP/SHV, that's about all the railway Cambodia needs. I will confess I have not run the numbers however - it just seemed obvious that every developed nation has high speed rail & good port/freight links.

Edit2: I should have added that my own reason for coming to Cambodia was to go to Angkor Wat, it just so happened my sister was living in Bangkok so it seemed so convenient just to pop over the border to see such a magnificent historical site. As it happens that trip sealed my fate to move here permanently, but in principle it was just meant to be a couple of days excursion - I'm sure there must be a ton of Bangkok regulars who have yet to see Angkor, and going back to the airport is just a hassle; crossing through the countryside on a proper train would be a great way to see much more and if a high speed job, should be much faster also.
