PHNOM PENH (Kyodo) -- An assembly plant to produce Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles opened in the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone on Thursday.
At an opening ceremony for the factory, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said, "Toyota is a giant company...When the giant comes to Cambodia with trust, many other companies will follow suit."
"Cambodia needs this kind of investment," he added.
The factory, operated by a Cambodian arm of Toyota Tsusho Corp., a group company under the Japanese automaker, will produce Toyota's Hilux pickup trucks and Fortuner SUVs.
Toyota Tsusho CEO Ichiro Kashitani said his company "will continue to promote its business in Cambodia, aiming to contribute to the happiness of the Cambodian people by realizing carbon neutrality and fostering human resources."
Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Cambodia) Co. is 90 percent owned by Toyota Tsusho, with local Cambodian partner Kong Nuon Group Co. holding the remaining 10 percent.

Cheap knock off parts coming soon...
Only in thought is man a God; in action and desire we are the slaves of circumstance.
That's Toyota's reputation out the window.
When I moved to Cambodia, the Toyota Camry held a 73% share of cars on the road. (White Landcrusiers, perhaps 15%) The Taliban sure loved their Hilux, even if they've now inherited an awful lot of Ford Rangers from the ANA.
Ford has been on a roll in Cambodia the last 5 years, Happy if Toyota steps up to the fight.

Remember when them Camry's were jacked fitted with 4WD suspension made for plain sailing on that long dusty road to the Poipet crossing.

They were jacked up but as far as I know they were just front wheel drive.
The Toyota Camry taxi, RHD version with two passengers in the front & two families in the back is STILL the fastest car in Cambodia. There are no substitutes for Samnang when he's on the phone & needs to overtake blind with a smile.
