Looking for tuk-tuk
As in to buy a tuk-tuk, not to get ripped off for a ride to the beach.
A guy was in my bar last night going on about how a tuk-tuk would cost about the same as a new Honda Airblade, but I haven't been able to find any for sale around here (Sihanoukville). Not sure what the actually price would be...

there's one out in front of pizza company for sale with a price of $450 on the sign.
apparently the conversion (according to our driver) from a tico to a tuktuk is about $800. meaning if you bought a 400-500 tico you would be looking at about $1200-1300 for one of the better tuktuks.
i'm pretty spoiled to the ones made from cars... a MUCH better ride in pretty much every sense.

no, they're still tuktuk drivers and should be treated as such. but they do seem a bit more cheerful, likely because they don't spend the day straddled across a moto seat getting rained on.gavinmac wrote:Like their drivers can change fifty dollar bills?OrangeDragon wrote:

Can someone post a picture of one of these Tico tuk-tuks? I've never seen one.

with the door in the back it looks like a limousine type, cut open ?
what could be the deeper sense behind it ?
without that remodeling it would have been a normal car... not bad either ?

Cheers, but I don't see how that can be called a tuk-tuk, it's just a small pick-up truck with an awning.

regardless of what you call it (they call them "super tuktuks") it provides a comfortable ride, with the driver protected from the elements, and a stronger engine than the motos while still giving customers the open air enjoyment and seating 6 people (7 if someone sat up front i suppose).
the tico versions take the numerous hills/etc in s'ville with relative ease and take away the bone jarring impact of the potholes while keeping the driver out of the rain when it comes. they're growing in popularity (i see half as many of them as of the regular ones here now, last time we were here there were 2) and i'm wondering how long until we see them in PP as well. Also noticed they're using other small cars now down here... hyundai and the like.
We're upgrading to a camry so i'll probably be bringing the tico down here to sell off to someone.

OD, how much u want for ur tico, condition, etc... I have a friend who is kicking the idea of buying one and turning it into a little pick up. Anyone out there have any informative thoughts or information to share on that issue, cost of conversion, photos to share, maybe even one set up already that someone is selling. thanks,
Ps. please keep all the smart ass remarks to a min.

pm sent.
i will go further to say the reason we're upgrading isn't because of space or vanity (well, the wife is excited... but it wasn't the reason) but that we plan on making a lot of trips by car in the coming months and can't rely on something so old to keep up safe for a long drive. tico's are great for town cars, but i wouldn't trust them for distance in a country where towing services are some other guy in a car with a rope.
