What our family got in the province comes in 3 sizes (got some more details). $200, $300, $500. The $500 system can run a single aircon.... which is a lot of juice.Buscador wrote:I think the people who are saying this is a complete ripoff either misread the post or just don't know what they are talking about. I don't know the OP and I have not priced solar in Cambodia for three years, but at that time a system that would barely power a laptop and a couple of phone chargers was $350-$500. His claims about what you could run off this setup are correct. 400Ah won't run your house with an AC and refrigerator going, or anything like that, but it will power quite a bit of electronics. If you do the math on what tarariverboat says he paid, or look online to see what a similar setup will cost in the west, $1000 for this system does not sound unreasonable for what you are getting--IF the batteries have very low use. It would be more appealing if both batteries were gel cells.
though following "just don't know what they are talking about" with "I have not priced solar in Cambodia for three years" gave me a chuckle.

Cheapest panel prices are about 80c a watt.

Add the Cambodia premium and it'll be at least double that I would guess. Then add mounting hardware, wiring, MPPT/charge controller, batteries, inverter, etc, etc.
No way a $500 system can run an aircon (the smallest being about 500w?), even using nominal specs.
You can get individual string-ribbon solar cells quite cheaply (as low as 30c/watt), is anyone making them up into panels here in Cambodia? I think that would save some of the transport/import hassle with big panels.
It looks like we'll have perovskite-based solar cells in just a couple of years which should be very much cheaper than current tech. "Contractor stuff" (labour, mounting hardware, wiring, regulations, etc) already accounts for a huge chunk of installed costs in the west, it's set to be the dominant cost.
Those silicon valley firms should work on disrupting the building industry instead of yet more online advertising.

There are people doing it but they use many times the number of panels like 40X the size of this system.

There are air conditioners designed for use on solar systems but they are about $2500. google solar air conditioners and you can read up in the differences and reasons conventional 120-220v AC are a poor choice.

and i don't see any cambodian distributors of cheaply imported chinese/vietnamese products there... which is what they would be buying here.
more than a "cambodia premium" i'd call it a western premium in those numbers you're seeing. and i'm sure if i were to walk up to the same shop that sold them to my provincial in laws and tried to buy them, they'd be substantially more than what they paid.

Hi there, my name is Dave and I am new to blogs so please excuse any inadvertant breaches of protocol while I get up to speed. Am not even sure if I am in the right place ,,, if not, then very grateful if I could be re-directed. Basically I am a European who has been married to a Khmer lady for 9 years most of which has been spent living in the UK and Malaysia. We will likely be moving to Siem Reap (her home town) permanently later this year. We are building a medium size house but the cost of grid electricity seems astronomical (I will be living on a pension) so was wondering if solar panels might be a good idea? If there is anyone with prior knowledge as to the do's and dont's of doing this I would be very grateful for any advice. Sincere thanks in advance for any advice or links etc. BW Dave
