I envy ricecakes' manliness. He does more physical labor in a weekend than I do in a decade.

Just stumbled across this old thread and thought I'd update.
My Honda 4 stroke whipper snipper is still running perfectly after 4 years of abuse. I've used it probably near 100 times. Starts every time no issues. I change oil whenever I change the blade out.
It's with me down in kep now
Smashing out some rural grass and small scrub.
They are still sold in central market. Still $300.

I was at the markets recently and asked for a genuine honda and the one they brought out was still a copy. Telltale sign was the lack of a decomp cam which is standard on honda gxs and chinese etchings on the magento not visible unless the clutch was removed otherwise i would have been fooled in thinking it was genuine. Every part had the correct looking stickers even down to the honda gx stamp on the block and walbro etched on the carby. Quality looked pretty good but at $285 forget it. Id sooner drive to thailand and shop at a honda dealer and pay the premium in baht.
Price these should be would be around $390-420 id assume for a real genuine one. Even wholesale back home is north of $350.
Ended up going with the $130 units and bought bag of spare clutches belts etc to go along with it assuming it would break. Was assembled like shit but after stripping it and reassembling it to stop the oil leak it runs pretty good. Not very powerful but fairly quiet and smooth.

I bought a genuine malaysian made 2.5 hp? Makita for $270 i think it was. I bought a lot of stuff on this trip so exact numbers evade me. It had all the manufacturers warranty card and registration and was from the authorised dealer. Also bought a few other things like electric corded drills and grinders.
I have yet to get it home and try it out but just by the feel of the parts you can tell its a hell of a lot sturdier and better built than the copies. 2.5 hp is a little underpowered but it was a sweet runner and very quiet and i tend to find genuine manufacturers underrate their equipment while copies tend to overrate or overclock their components to make ratings they cant handle. Not a big fan of briggs motors but im much less of a fan of chinese copies.
Grateful for some photos, details of shop that sold etc if you can.did they sell large mowers for rural? Thanks.

Im in a hotel room now and the mower is still in its box but ill grab the details when i can. As far as i can remember i didnt see larger riding mowers or even higher power versions of the push mower i got but what i happened to need was sitting on the showroom floor so i just bought it (after starting it and running it for a bit).
With the new year coming and us heading home soon i know im going to forget to update so heres the info i can scrounge. For the life of me i cant find the invoice but I want to say it was $370 not 270 but dont quote me on that. I was considerably more than the chinese copy mowers we saw. Bought a lot of shit this trip including two bikes a lot of other tools etc. I dont know which model it is meaning this year or last year etc but its the small 2 kw model (2.5? hp dont know horsepower) with small wheels.
Mower looks like this still packed away but it runs really nice and quiet as well as the blade. Its well balanced but probably underpowered at its size. I only have a 1/2 hectare to do and dont want to bother with a riding mower so this will be fine I hope.
Build quality is kind of like a cambodian made honda scooter vs chinese made one. Overall build quality definitely has a budget feel to it but it doesnt feel like its ready to break in two or that it was slapped together in 30 seconds. Body is decently thick only thing i wish it had were bigger wheels and that they were driven. Maybe they had some that are i dont know i didnt look that much as we were feeling a bit sick when shopping.
I did landscaping as a teenager back home and used honda commercial stuff and some consumer grade gc powered stuff and while id prefer that over this briggs powered version i cant complain with the price. Probably 1200aud for the mower i used to use so for this thing at sub 300 im more than happy so long as i dont have to bother with chinese nonsense. Whipper snippers i dont care as theyre easy to service and tear apart (already stripped one in our hotel room to fix an oil leak) but mowers are a bit bigger and going to do more so i wanted a name brand mower.
Hope that helps.
