Good value smartphone store?
Which Phnom Penh phone store is least likely to try and rip me off when looking for a new phone? Or is it best to visit Thailand or Singapore instead?
I'm used to android so I just want a Samsung or something.

Samsung? Really?
For me it will be a ZTE Nubia Z7 MAX, $320 with 4G and amazing camera. Better than Samsung.

Or the next Meizu MX4, coming out next month around same price.
For a local shop, try this: hakse.com.kh/default.aspx

You'll find better prices and selection outside of Cambodia.
Funny about Hakse, I wanted to pay for a $850 purchase with my credit card, which the owner or manager initially said was no problem. When it came time to pay, all of a sudden (without even trying or looking at the machine), they tell me the credit card machine is broken but I can walk to the ATM nearby. I didn't believe it was broken, and said okay maybe I'll come back later with cash but I'd prefer to pay with credit card for the card benefits.
When I started to leave, just like magic and without them even looking at it, the machine was suddenly working. Though, they added $5 to the bill without telling me.
I understand the CC processing fees cost them, and don't really care about the $5. It's the lack of integrity and horrible customer relations (lying to your customer) that was impressive for such a commonly recommended store.

I would choose Korean over Chinese every time.pharmacambodia wrote:Samsung? Really?

In fact, I'd probably choose Congolese over Chinese.

And you'd be silly. The better Chinese phones (like the OnePlus One I just bought) are top quality. The Chinese DAC that drives my tunes in terms of workmanship is a thing of beauty.vladimir wrote:I would choose Korean over Chinese every time.pharmacambodia wrote:Samsung? Really?

Yeah, the thing what disturbs me about OnePlus One is the slightly yellowish screen that you get if you are unlucky.jm wrote:And you'd be silly. That, and also it's design made me look at the Nubia models, and I am glad I found them. ZTE has been selling phones in the UK since the The Z7 Max has the better camera (check the milkyway pictures) and 32 GB, SD card, 2 Simcards and better 4G. That for the same price as the OPOne and no need for an invite to purchase.
The quality of the Chinese phones varies between amazing and shit. It's all about the brand and that's an original.
The first row phones from companies as Meizu, Vivo, ZTE, and Oppo are as good as Sony, LG or Samsung.
Then comes Huawei, Lenovo, TCL/Alcatel and Xiaomi. That are all ok phones, but not as outstanding as the first row, better for the budget, but not crappy at all, but something you can hold on for a few years (if you can speak in years about phones at all nowadays, but that's just a question how much you need).
Xiaomi is the 'Apple of China', selling more phones than Apple already and taking over all Asia for it's price and quality.
ZTE has been selling the ZTE Glide (San francisco AMOLED) phone in the UK since 2010 and the quality and demand was so huge, that people bought it in shops and sold it on Ebay to the rest of Europe with profit. No question they overtook the mainstream and are making amazing leading edge deluxe quality phones (no, i don't work for them ). I just research well before I give up my hard earned money to some capitalistic motherf*cker. (no sarcasm!)
With the other brands: "It's up to you", as with taxi girls,
you might get lucky, but mostly you get "fucked over" and feel "like crap" after.
The only problem at a local shop is to get an original one....
Whatever brand, I´ll be going to official brand stores such as Samsung from now on.
When I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S3 in Phnom Penh a while ago, which all though the IMEI was valid, turned out to have a "fake" operating system installed (signed to a seemingly chinese site: xda007.com), whilst the phone according the IMEI I wrote into IMEI.info was of the type SHV-E210K or S, which is specific to Korea. Not the end of the world of course, but if you understand that custom ROMs such as Cyanogenmod is the way to go, then forget about that as SHV-E210s are not supported by this most excellent android operating system. I tried to get a refund so I could instead look for an international version of the S3 that CM supports, but the random phone shop, khmer owned, refused.

Good idea, just don't expect fantastic service.nickix wrote:Whatever brand, I´ll be going to official brand stores such as Samsung from now on.
I bought 2 phones there on the same day, and the one woman at reception acted like she was doing me a favour, I'd guess related to the owner of the store.

Oneplus One is impressive for the price, but I wouldn't trust them like a Korean brand. Plus people will look at you funny if it isn't an LG, Apple or Samsung.
